A dummy rocket that was inadvertently left behind by the Indian Navy personnel after a practice session sparked off a minor panic near the Sassoon Dock on Tuesday afternoon. Navy officials have taken possession of the rocket.
According to police, the rocket was seen lying in the grass near the Fisheries Department office close to the dock, and was reported to the police. A team of policemen was rushed to the spot to conduct inquiries and Navy officials were also contacted.
“The rocket was a cement filled dummy used for practice, and was left inadvertently lying at the Sassoon Docks. Navy officers reached the spot and took it into their possession,” said additional commissioner of police Krishna Prakash, south region.
A Defence spokesperson added that the rocket was inspected by a Naval team and classified as an already used practice rocket. “The rocket is fired in the high seas as per laid down procedures and is completely safe as there is no explosive content left after firing. The rocket has been transferred to the Armament Depot for safe-keeping. In all likelihood, the rocket was snagged in a fishing net at sea,” said the spokesperson.
