The greenfield airport, developed by Navi Mumbai International Airport Ltd (NMIAL), is a 74:26 joint venture between Adani Airport Holdings Ltd (AAHL) and City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra (CIDCO). At an estimated cost of Rs 16,700 crore, the project aims to ease congestion at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) and meet the growing air traffic demand in the country.

In July 2024, then Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu and Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol visited the airport site to review the progress of the work. After his visit, Mohol had said, “Going by the progress of the work, the airport will be operational in March next year.”

The NMIA will have two parallel runways, allowing simultaneous landings and takeoffs. The project is planned in multiple phases, ultimately reaching the capacity of over 90 million passengers per annum (MPPA). In its initial phase, the airport will handle 20 MPPA and manage 800,000 tonnes of cargo annually. It will also feature a 3,700-metre runway capable of accommodating large commercial aircraft.

In December 2024, Arun Bansal, CEO, Adani Airport Holdings Ltd, said that domestic operations at NMIA were expected to begin in the second half of May, with international flights commencing by the end of July.
