The Nashik police have arrested the fathers of nine minors over flying kites using the banned nylon strings during Makar Sankranti festival. The accused were booked under the charge of attempt to culpable homicide, the police said, adding that 28 people have been arrested so far since Saturday.
The police have registered over 50 cases as part of a crackdown against using nylon ‘manjas’ for kite-flying which had led to injuries and deaths after the sharp strings slit throats of the victims.
As there have been instances of people getting injured during Makar Sankranti festival due to use of nylon manjas for kite-flying, the Aurangabad bench of the Bombay High Court on January 8 ‘deprecated’ the Maharashtra government’s inaction to form a law or policy to curb the menace.
Citing Makar Sankranti festival, it directed the police and civic bodies to take strict action against the use of nylon manja for flying kites.
“As the various ploys we tried did not work, we knew we would have to make arrests for people to take this issue seriously. The nine fathers arrested were sent to judicial custody and they have applied for bail,” said an officer.
Last week in Nashik a motorcyclist sustained stitches to his neck and throat after he got entangled in a nylon manja.
“There has been enough awareness created against using nylon manja to fly kites. If parents are still allowing their children to use it, action is necessary,” the officer said.
Hence, every year the Maharashtra Police ban the storage, sale or use of nylon string or thread, popularly known as manja, used in kite flying, to prevent injuries to humans, animals and birds during Makar Sankranti.
