Sunita Jamgade, a 43-year-old woman from Maharashtra’s Nagpur who reportedly crossed the Line of Control (LoC) earlier this month, has been booked for espionage, the Nagpur police said. Jamgade, who reportedly crossed the border to meet a man named Zulfikar, is currently in police custody till June 2 on court orders.
Police Inspector Satish Aade confirmed the development.
Niketan Kadam, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Zone V, revealed that Jamgade’s decision to cross the heavily militarised border was driven by her desire to meet Zulfikar, a person she had been in touch with on social media. “During the investigation, we found several chats on her phone. While there were conversations with multiple individuals, Zulfikar stood out,” said DCP Kadam.
Initially, Jamgade gave unclear answers, claiming she was exploring business opportunities in the neighbouring country. But eventually, she admitted that her only real intention was to meet Zulfikar, the police said.
Jamgade had gone missing from Hunderman, a remote village near the LoC in Kargil, Ladakh. She was travelling with her 12-year-old son at the time. Police officials were left disturbed by this detail, and when asked why she had left her child behind, she responded that she thought she would return soon.
Despite the gravity of the situation, Kadam clarified that no concrete evidence has emerged so far to suggest that Jamgade passed on any sensitive information. “We have not found proof that she shared classified or critical details with anyone,” he stated.
Authorities are now coordinating with the police in Kargil to determine whether Jamgade received any local assistance in crossing the LoC. Since she was briefly in the custody of Pakistan’s armed forces, the investigation will also probe what transpired during her time across the border.
Jamgade was brought back to Nagpur on May 28 and presented before a special court, which remanded her to police custody until June 2. Officials said a decision on whether to extend her custody will be made on Monday.
There is also a possibility, police sources said, that Jamgade may be taken to Hunderman in Kargil to reconstruct the route she took to cross the LoC.
