A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s push for Uniform Civil Code (UCC), a delegation of Muslim leaders in the state Wednesday met Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray to apprise him about the community’s stand on UCC, which they claimed with “affect all communities”.

Maulana Mahmood Daryabadi, a member of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), said the delegation had earlier met several political leaders from Maharashtra and said they would meet the BJP leadership as well to apprise them about the community’s stand on the issue of UCC.

“We have been meeting heads of all political parties to put forth our side on the issue of the Uniform Civil Code. UCC will not only affect Muslims. There are close to 300 personal laws in the country and UCC will affect all communities. Uddhav Thackeray has promised us that he will look into the issue,” said Daryabadi.

AIMPLB, the Islamic personal law body, has voiced its opposition to UCC which seeks to formulate and implement a set of common personal laws for all the citizens of India regardless of their religion, caste, and creed.

The AIMPLB has said that the UCC will infringe on various communities’ freedom to practice their faith and way of life as guaranteed by the Constitution.

The meeting also came after AIMPLB on Tuesday evening held one of its first meetings to discuss what members said was the outline of their response and the main issues that they would touch upon.

Dr Qasim Rasool, executive committee member of AIMPLB, said they will submit their feedback to the Law Commission in the first week of July.
