Frustrated and stressed over allegedly consistent demands for a motorcycle and gold by her husband and mother-in-law, as dowry from her father, a young woman died by suicide on Thursday in the Dahisar area. On the father’s complaint, the police booked the accused husband and his mother on charges of dowry death and abetment to suicide on Friday.

Sneha Reddy, 19, was declared dead at Shatabdi hospital in Kandivali, the police said.

Following this, her father, Manojkumar Reddy, filed a police complaint against her husband, Kailash Wadari, and his mother, Anantama Wadari, alleging the two would harass Sneha mentally and pressure her to bring dowry from her father’s place.

Kailash, who is a graphic designer in a company, got married to Sneha on January 24 this year at their village in Raichur, Karnataka.

As per Reddy’s police complaint, his daughter would often call him and tell him how her husband and mother-in-law would abuse her, make her do all the household chores, and give her food only if she did all the work.

“Kailash and his mother would ask my daughter to bring a motorcycle and gold from my house and would harass her mentally and physically and subject her to cruelty. They would also not let her eat food on time and keep her fasting for a long time. My daughter used to call me and narrate her ordeal, crying incessantly,” Reddy stated in the FIR.

On Reddy’s complaint, the police have booked Kailash and his mother under sections 304B, 306, 34, 498A, and 504 of the IPC.
