A 28-YEAR-OLD woman allegedly strangled her six-year-old daughter to death before hanging herself at her Charkop residence Sunday.
The police suspect Prerna Katakdound killed herself and her daughter Amrita on account of financial distress the family was under. Her husband Sudhir, a contract worker with the BMC, was away at work when the incident took place.
Senior inspector at Charkop police station Ramchandra Gaikwad said the incident came to light Sunday evening when Sudhir returned to their Sahyadri Nagar residence in Charkop, Kandivli (west). He found the body of his wife hanging from the fan. Amrita’s body was lying in the same room. Sudhir, with the help of neighbours, took them to the Rajawadi hospital where they were declared dead on arrival.
Based on the post-mortem report, the police suspect Prerna strangulated Amrita following which she hung herself from the ceiling fan. A case of murder has been registered against Prerna for killing her daughter. “No suicide note was found at their residence. Based on our inquiries so far, the financial crisis the family was going through seems to be the reason that drove Prerna to take the extreme step,” said Gaikwad.
