Mumbai: Woman gets 10-yr jail term for counterfeit currency

A 32-YEAR-OLD woman was sentenced to a ten-year jail-term for possessing and using counterfeit notes of Rs 1,000 in 2015. The court also sentenced her co-accused to five years in jail for possession of 33 counterfeit notes.
In 2015, the woman, Alta Shaikh, currently lodged in Byculla jail, had given a Rs 1,000 note to a hawker in Santacruz from whom she bought clothes. An agent working with hawkers to collect part of their income for a credit society had been creating awareness about fake currency doing the rounds. On the day of the incident, on November 18, 2015, the accused handed over a Rs 1,000 note to buy clothes but the agent noticed that the note did not look proper. While the woman tried to escape, the hawkers nabbed her and informed the police.
The Vakola police searched Shaikh and found five more notes. They also discovered her connection with a co-accused, Jakir Hussain Shaikh, and found 33 notes with him. They were charged under sections pertaining to counterfeit currency and were found guilty by the court this week. Two other accused are absconding.
