Minimum temperatures have dipped nearly seven degrees Celsius over three days, and Mumbai woke up to its coldest December day so far on Tuesday morning, at 16.5 degrees. The city is in for a cool spell in the coming days with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting a significant dip in temperatures to nearly 13 degrees Celsius by Friday.
After sweltering at 34 degrees Celsius during the day on Monday, Mumbai woke up to below-normal temperatures on Tuesday morning when the suburban observatory in Santacruz recorded a minimum temperature of 16.5 degrees Celsius, which is nearly 2.3 degrees below normal.
Meanwhile, the Colaba coastal observatory logged a temperature of 21.7 degrees Celsius during the same period.
This marked a significant dip from the weekend, when minimum temperatures hovered around 23 degrees Celsius on Saturday morning and around 21 degrees Celsius on Sunday.
Meteorologists attributed the current cold spell to a western disturbance that passed through the north.
“There was a weak western disturbance that passed by Sunday. With this, cool northerly winds started moving in, reaching up to Mumbai from Monday. Since the northerly winds are very dry, it leads to a drop in humidity levels. Furthermore, as the nights are clearer, it allows the land to cool down much faster. Owing to these factors, Mumbai is expected to see a further drop in temperatures over the next couple of days,” said Athreya Shetty, an independent weather observer.
According to the IMD, Mumbai is expected to experience a consistent dip in day as well as night temperatures over the week. While the maximum temperatures are forecast to fall up to 32 degrees Celsius, the minimum temperatures are slated to dip gradually, with a peak of 13 degrees between Thursday and Friday. Over the weekend, however, temperatures are slated to experience a spike with a change in wind directions.
Records show that Mumbai’s coldest December day was recorded at 10.6 degrees Celsius in 1949, while its warmest day of the month logged 39.8 degrees in 1987.
