Mumbai records highest single-day rain in June since 2023; orange alert issued

This is the highest rainfall recorded in an IMD observatory during a 24-hour period this year and the highest single-day rainfall recorded in June during the last two years. Earlier, 148 mm of rainfall was recorded on June 29 in 2023. Prior to this, in 2018, the Colaba observatory had recorded 164 mm in a single day on June 10.

Meanwhile, the Santacruz observatory recorded 60.5 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours.

The weather bureau had issued a yellow alert for Mumbai till 8.30 am on Thursday and was later upgraded into an orange alert.

“Alongside the low-pressure, the wind speed has also increased due to which heavy rainfall is ongoing in the entire Konkan region. This condition will continue at least for the next 24 hours,” Shubhangi Bhute, director of IMD Mumbai, said on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) automatic weather system showed that Mumbai’s island city recorded 86 mm of rainfall, followed by 65 mm in eastern suburbs and 53 mm at western suburbs.

Furthermore, the BMC data also show Mumbai’s water stock in the lake levels has risen by 3 per cent in the last 24 hours. According to BMC’s data, the average water stock is at 13.18 per cent or 1.9 lakh million litres against the total capacity of 14.47 lakh million litres.

In the last 24 hours, the catchment area of Modak Sagar lake received 235 mm of rainfall, followed by 218 mm at Tansa, 170 mm at Middle Vaitarna, 141 mm at Bhatsa, 96 mm at Tulsi, 55 mm at Vihar and 33 mm at Upper Vaitarna.
