Two men have been arrested by Marine Drive police on Friday for duping the residents of Dhobi Ghat of Rs 15 lakh on the pretext of resolving their issue with the office of registrar. One of the accused allegedly posed as a personal assistant of Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

According to the police officials, the case was registered on Friday following which the two accused, identified as Suhas Mahadik and Kiran Patil, were brought to the police station and arrested.

An officer said, “There is a dispute between the residents and the chairman of the Dhobi Ghat Society over land and in order to seek help, the complainant Mallesh Kasturi had gone to meet a social worker on March 14.” Mahadik was also already present there, police said. However, while discussing the issue with the social worker, Mahadik claimed that he knew the personal assistant of Fadnavis who could help them in getting their work done from the registrar office.

The police said Mahadik initially demanded Rs 35 lakh from the complainant and as they were not in a position to pay that much, the accused agreed to help at Rs 15 lakh.

Subsequently, Mahadik and Patil took the money from them on March 16 after which they vanished. “Later, as the duo stopped responding to their calls and messages, they sensed something amiss and approached us. A case of cheating was registered,” said an officer.

The police then arrested the two accused and produced them before court on Saturday. They have been remanded in police custody.
