Mumbai Police have initiated an inquiry after two tourist cars with the same number were spotted near Taj Mahal hotel in Colaba on Monday.

According to personnel of Colaba police station, Nariman Point resident Sakir Ali was waiting with his vehicle, an Ertiga having registration number MH01-EE-2388, opposite Gateway of India when another Ertiga car having the same registration number came by. He stopped the car and informed the police.

Both the vehicles and their drivers were taken to the Colaba police station for investigation. “Two cars with the same number plate were at Colaba at around 1pm. One number plate is found to be forged. Original registration car driver complained about it,” said a senior police officer.

A preliminary probe revealed that Navi Mumbai resident Prasad Kadam had tampered with his vehicle’s number plate and modified it to evade seizure by the finance company from where he took a car loan and defaulted payment.

It was also alleged that Ali was receiving the challans for the traffic rules violations done by Kadam, as he had changed his number plate to Ali’s car number, sources said.

Police are in process of verifying the vehicle’s registration and other details and are in process of filing a case, said another police officer.
