In a special drive against traffic violations, especially drunken driving, on Holi, as many as 403 motorists were booked by the police in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Thane on Monday for driving under the influence of alcohol. According to the statistics released by the Mumbai Police, traffic police caught 124 people for driving in a drunken state, 4,593 were fined for driving without helmet, and 429 others for triple-seat riding. An officer said, "We had deployed our personnel to ensure that the law and order of the city is under control." Thane police officials said they took legal action against 173 people for driving under the influence of alcohol, 663 were fined for triple-seat riding, and 1,542 for riding without helmets. The Thane police also booked 365 auto-rickshaw drivers for ferrying passengers more than the permissible limit. Deputy Commissioner of Police Vinay Rathod (Traffic) said, "We sought help from the local police to cover areas under the Thane commissionerate. Around 50 breath-analyser kits were handed over to our personnel." The Navi Mumbai police on the other hand has been conducting a special drive for the past four days. On Monday, the Navi Mumbai police registered 43 cases of drunken driving. Police officials said the special drive will continue till midnight.
