Mumbai to sizzle at 36°C: why IMD is forecasting another spell of hot days over weekend
The IMD indicated that there will be no dip below 35 degrees Celsius before January 28 in Mumbai.

After a brief break, Mumbai expects another string of warm days beginning Friday, with daytime temperatures projected to reach 36 degrees Celsius over the coming weekend.
After enduring temperatures exceeding 35 degrees over the last weekend, the city found relief in cooler weather on Wednesday. According to data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the Santacruz observatory registered a maximum temperature of 32.2 degrees Celsius. In comparison, the Colaba coastal observatory recorded a maximum of 31.2 degrees Celsius on Wednesday.
However, this relief is likely to be short-lived as the IMD said the temperatures will soar to 35 degrees Celsius from Friday, which will hover over 36 degrees Celsius between Saturday and Sunday. The above-normal temperatures are here to stay for at least five more days, with the weather department indicating no dip below 35 degrees Celsius before January 28.
Weather experts have attributed the temperature spikes to an anticyclone over Odisha, which is set to usher in dry, inland winds.
Mahesh Palawat of Skymet Weather Services told The Indian Express, “For the next few days, Mumbai will be receiving dry, southeasterly winds, which will lead to the spike in temperatures. This results from an anticyclone system, which is presently over Odisha, that will lead to the influx of winds from the inland. These south-easterly winds are dry and warm. Furthermore, the westerly winds will also be delayed, and no northerly winds will flow in the region. Therefore, the temperatures are set to rise for the next few days.”
Mumbai has been experiencing many days of above-normal maximum temperatures this January, starting with the Santacruz station even registering a record-shattering 36 degrees Celsius on January 3. Data showed that this was the hottest January day since 2016 at least. The highest recorded temperature in January was 37.4 degrees Celsius in 2006, while the lowest was 7.2 degrees Celsius in 1962.
