The Ghatkopar police arrested a 22-year-old tutor late on Tuesday for allegedly abetting the suicide of a student he was teaching computers.

On July 30, a 17-year-old-girl hanged herself in her home after sending an “obscene” selfie to her tutor who she had been allegedly in a relationship with for the last two years, the police said.

The father of the victim approached the police on Tuesday with a voice recording in which his daughter was reportedly pleading to the tutor to delete the image that she sent to him.

The father had also submitted the phone that contained the messages shared between the tutor and his daughter.

“During investigation, it was learnt that the girl who was in class 12 had joined a computer class in Ghatkopar. The victim was having an affair with the computer teacher. The father of the girl lodged a complaint against the teacher and he has been arrested on charges of abatement to suicide,” said Vyankat Patil, senior police inspector, Ghatkopar police station.

The investigators said the teen had not told her parents about her relationship with the teacher.

“Through various electronic evidence, we have learnt that the minor had sent an obscene image of herself and was regretting the decision,” said an investigator.

“She demanded the tutor to delete the photo as she was afraid that he could circulate the picture. Since the tutor did not delete the image, it drove the 17-year-old victim to take her life by hanging herself on Saturday afternoon with a rope,” added the investigating officer.

The police said the family had found the picture and the conversation between the two and informed the police claiming that the tutor was responsible for the teen’s death.
