After recording the driest August in the past eight years, Mumbai in September surpassed its monthly quota of rain with the city recording 377 millimetres (mm) of rain till Sunday morning, which is five per cent more than its September average of 359 mm, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

While the city didn’t record prolonged bouts of heavy rain, on September 7, Mumbai recorded three-digit rainfall since July. The IMD officials said that the monthly rainfall figures may cross 400 mm by the end of the month.

According to IMD’s five-day forecast, it issued a yellow alert for Mumbai on Sunday, indicating moderate spell of rain, while between September 25 and 28, the weather bureau has indicated light rain may continue in sporadic spell.

Meanwhile, for Palghar, Thane and Raigad, a yellow alert has been issued till Monday.

In the past 24 hours, the Santacruz observatory recorded 16 mm of rain, followed by 21 mm in Colaba, the IMD’s figures also show that till now, the city has recorded 2,872 mm of rain.

“Between September 26 and 30, there is a possibility of thunderstorms in Mumbai owing to formation of a shear zone between Maharashtra and Konkan. This may bring good rain in the maximum city along with various other parts of Konkan belt and interior Maharashtra,” said an IMD official.

Meanwhile, the water stock in all the seven lakes of Mumbai stood at 98.68 per cent on Sunday, while on September 24, 2022, the level was 98.97 per cent and in 2021, it was 99 per cent.
