(Express File Photo) In a bid to make Mumbai ‘rabies-free’, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is set to carry out vaccination of 15,000 stray dogs in six municipal wards. The programme started on Friday evening and Dr Kalimpasha Patha, manager of Deonar abattoir, who is looking into it, said that in the first two days more than 1,000 dogs have been vaccinated.
“We have set a 10-day-long target to vaccinate 15,000 dogs. However, the dogs often hide in places and it becomes difficult to catch them. Despite the challenges, we are working towards achieving the target within the deadline,” Pathan said. “After the target is reached, we will evaluate the process and assess our performance before moving on to the next phase of vaccinating more dogs,” he added.

Once scanned, the QR codes will give details about the vaccination status along with details of the feeder and other relevant medical information. Civic officials said that the said phase of the drive will be carried out in six municipal wards: R North (Dahisar), R Central (Borivali), R South (Kandivali), P North (Malad), S (Bhandup, Kanjurmarg) and T (Mulund) wards.
The civic body has roped in 15 different NGOs for carrying out the drive including the Mumbai Veterinary College. Earlier in 2014, a dog census carried out by the civic body showed that there are around 95,000 stray dogs in Mumbai. Civic officials said that currently the estimated dog population would be around 1,64,000.
