A schoolgirl jumped off a moving train near the CSMT railway station on Sunday morning while trying to escape a man who allegedly tried to molest her, the police said. The incident took place at 9.30 am when the 13-year-old girl boarded a train at the CSMT station to go to her tuition classes on Currey Road. The police said an unidentified person followed the student inside the compartment as the train started moving.

“There was no one else in the compartment at the time and the man began to walk towards the girl. She was very scared and pulled the chain to stop the train,” said inspector Vikas Chaughule of CSMT railway police station.

He added that the man told the girl to keep quiet all the while advancing towards her. The girl, the police said, who was in a state of panic, ran towards the door and jumped off the moving train.

Railway staff near the station spotted the girl lying on the tracks and rushed to her aid. Chaughule said the girl was taken to JJ Hospital, where she is now out of danger.

“As the train had just left the station at the time, it wasn’t moving at a high speed. So the girl was not not badly injured when she fell down. She has suffered minor injuries to her legs,” said Chaughule. He added that the girl has provided a detailed description of the man.

“We are scanning CCTV footage from the railway station to trace him,” he said.
