The Maharashtra government is considering a proposal to regularise housing societies occupying land leased by the government by violating terms and conditions. A calling attention motion was raised in the Assembly on problems faced by one such society in Thane’s Ambernath. In his reply, Revenue Minister Eknath Khadse admitted that thousands of housing societies were facing a similar problem.
He said the societies under the scanner stood on land allotted on occupancy basis and were required to seek prior approval for change of use or transactions for any transfer of right. To overcome the problem, Khadse said the government was considering a proposal to regularise these violations. He said the government might have to consider the rate at which the regularisation fee could be collected since “some societies may not be in a position to abide by the existing norm”.
