
Maharashtra, Mumbai Heavy Rain, Weather HIGHLIGHTS: Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in Mumbai, Thane, Raigad and Palghar on Wednesday. The city has been receiving incessant rain in the last week, with July already recording average rainfall of 840.7mm — the Santacruz observatory registered 827.5 mm rainfall in the first 10 days of the months.
More than 320 local trains in the city were cancelled on Wednesday, while several more were delayed. Flights were also running later due to the weather. An Air India plan to Mumbai overshot the runway while landing amid heavy rains, The Indian Express reported.

Vasai, Nallasopara and Virar, meanwhile, were left inaccessible by rail and road yesterday. Nearly 1,500 passengers were stranded after long-distance trains were halted outside these townships. The passengers along with around 400 residents from the low-lying salt pan lands in Manikpur were rescued on boats by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).
The Western Railway has tweeted a list of trains short terminated (ST), reversed (EX) and rescheduled.

IMD today issued a warning saying heavy to very heavy rains with extremely heavy falls at isolated places are expected over the Konkan region and Goa.
More than 24 hours after stalling trains between Virar and Nallasopara stations, train services resume by 10.15 am. Only fast trains heading towards Virar from Bhayander stations are not operational, till water levels recede. Trains working at restricted speed.

In the first 10 days of the month, Mumbai has received 93 per cent above normal rainfall for this season. The average rainfall for July was recorded as 840.7 mm. Ajay Kumar, scientist, India Meteorological Department (IMD) told The Indian Express, "This is not abnormal as in some years it can be more and in some years less. This can change later over the weeks."

Transportation services in the city were severely affected on Wednesday due to the rains. Over 320 local trains were cancelled while many along the central and western lines were delayed. Air-conditioned locals on the WR were suspended as well. Flights were delayed by up to 30 minutes. Further, more than 30 BEST buses were diverted due to waterlogging.

The Western Railway has said that the assistance from Indian Army/Navy has been requested in terms of disaster management, only to provide transportation of food supplies and other relief material to stranded passengers at various locations between Vasai Road and Virar as these areas are submerged.
Indian Army has arrived at the Nallasopara station with food and relief materials. They are set to join NDRF and local administration in rescue and relief operations.
