The Mumbai Police have decided to award the three best Ganesh mandals based on the security arrangements there for the 10-day-long festival. The move comes to encourage better security measures at mandals.
Ganesh mandals across the city are being screened, police sources said. The mandals which will be shortlisted will be later closely examined by a three-member panel.
Police said the awards will be given away for the security measures adapted against terror threat. The law and order situation in the mandals will also be taken into account. We have decided that two Ganeshotsav mandals from each of the 13 zones in Mumbai will be shortlisted. Once we shortlist 26 mandals,we will review their security measures, said Additional Commissioner of Police (Protection and Security) Madhukar Pandey.
The police will review if enough volunteers have been deployed,if there are separate queues for men and women to avoid untoward incidents and if police guidelines on anti-terror measures are being complied with. The awards are likely to be announced next month.
