Mumbai News Today Highlights : Amabadas Danve, the Leader of Opposition in the state Legislative Council has been suspended for five days for allegedly misbehaving and using unparliamentary language in the House on Monday. At the time, the ruling alliance protesting to demand that a resolution be passed in the Council and sent to the Lok Sabha, condemning Rahul Gandhi for his remarks on Hindus.

The Opposition staged a walkout from the House after the deputy chairperson refused to hold a discussion on Danve’s suspension. Danve is a Shiv Sena UBT leader from Aurangabad. He was elected as MLC in June 2022. Earlier in the day, the BJP had demonstrated outside the state Assembly against Rahul Gandhi’s remarks.

With Assembly elections due in Maharashtra, Prime Minister Narendra Modi Monday called the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance as a “time-tested friendship, bound by common ideals and a shared vision for India’s development”. The Mahayuti alliance of BJP-Shiv Sena-NCP, which faced setback during the Lok Sabha polls, will contest Assembly elections as a coalition.

Hawkers have taken over Mumbai's streets, no place left for pedestrians: Bombay HC

Unauthorized hawkers have virtually taken over every street in the city leaving no place for pedestrians, the Bombay High Court has observed, asking why ordinary citizens should not get the treatment that only "VVIPs" seem to get.

A division bench of Justices M S Sonak and Kamal Khata in an order of June 25 said the problem has reached "alarming proportions", and the government and civic body cannot take their own "sweet time" to deal with it.

A copy of the order became available on Tuesday.

The high court had last year taken suo motu note of the issue of illegal and unauthorized hawkers and vendors in the city, and initiated this petition.

The court has issued several directions to the Maharashtra government and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation but their implementation continues to be a casualty, the judges said. (PTI)

Five from Telangana killed as speeding car falls into drainage pit in Pune district

Five persons from Telangana were killed and another injured on Tuesday when the car they were travelling in veered off the road and fell into a roadside drainage pit along the Pune-Solapur Highway in Pune district, police said.

The incident occurred near Dalaj village under the limits of Bhigwan police station.

According to police, six persons- all in their late 20s- were travelling in the car from Mumbai to Telangana when the incident occurred around 3:30 PM.

"After an outing in Mumbai, the six persons were returning to their home state in the car. Prima facie, the driver lost control at the wheel due to slippery road amid heavy rain, causing the speeding car to veer off and land in a drainage pit," an official said. (PTI)

DRI seizes ganja worth Rs 5 crore at Mumbai airport, arrests passenger Mumbai, Jul 2 (PTI) The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has arrested an Indian air passenger and seized ganja worth Rs 5 crore from him at the Mumbai international airport, an official said on Tuesday.

Based on specific intelligence, officials of the DRI (Mumbai Zonal Unit) intercepted the passenger when he arrived from Bangkok at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport on Monday, he said.

During a search of his bags, the DRI officials found nine vacuum packed silver coloured packets having different fruit markings on each bag. The packets were found to contain a greenish substance in lump form weighing 5.34 kg, he informed. (PTI)

Transgender attacked by unidentified man at housing society in Mumbai

A 34-year-old transgender was assaulted by an unidentified man over a petty dispute at a residential building in the western suburb of Andheri here, police said on Tuesday.

The incident occurred in a housing society in the Versova area on Monday night, an official said.

The victim, a choreographer, lived alone in her flat on the second floor of the building, and she had been facing frequent power outages in the last couple of days, he said.

The official said that on Monday, the victim found out that some people from the building were tampering with the electricity metres on the ground floor by switching the power off and on. (PTI)

Porsche crash: Court grants bail to teen's father, grandfather in family driver's kidnapping case

A Pune court on Tuesday granted bail to the father and the grandfather of the juvenile involved in the Porsche car crash, in a case pertaining to alleged kidnapping and wrongful confinement of their family driver after the fatal accident in May.

According to police, the teen's father and the grandfather allegedly kidnapped their family driver after he left a police station on May 19 at 11 pm, hours after the crash, wrongfully confined him at their bungalow and tried to force him to admit that he, and not the juvenile, was behind the wheels when the accident took place.

A Porsche car driven by the 17-year-old boy allegedly in a drunken state fatally knocked down two motorbike-borne software engineers in Pune's Kalyani Nagar area in the early hours of May 19.

On June 25, the Bombay High Court directed that the boy be released from an observation home, saying the Juvenile Justice Board's (JJB) order on his detention was illegal. (PTI)

Woman moves HC seeking termination of 'unwanted' pregnancy

A 28-year-old woman has approached the Bombay High Court seeking to terminate her 26-week pregnancy as the same was "unwanted".

The woman in her plea said she already has a four-year-old daughter and is going through divorce proceedings with her estranged husband. As per the plea, the woman is in a relationship with a friend with whom she got pregnant.

Pursuant to the plea, the high court last week directed a medical board to examine the woman and submit a report on its opinion.

A division bench of Justices A S Gadkari and Neela Gokhale on Tuesday perused the medical board's report and noted that it was not in favour of termination of the pregnancy.

The bench asked Dande to consult with the woman as she may not want to risk her life going through the termination procedure. (PTI)

Unite for quota cause or face consequences in assembly polls: Jarange tells Maratha leaders

Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange on Tuesday urged MLAs and MPs from his community to unite in the fight for reservation under the OBC category or face consequences in the forthcoming Maharashtra assembly elections.

Speaking to reporters, Jarange outlined plans to hold peaceful rallies in every district of Maharashtra from July 6 to 13, advocating for the quota demand.

Jarange has been at the forefront of protests demanding the implementation of a draft notification that recognises Kunbis as “sage soyare” (blood relatives) of Maratha community members. He is also pushing for a law that identifies Kunbis as Marathas, making them eligible for quota under the OBC grouping.

"Those Maratha leaders who fail to support the reservation cause will face consequences in the upcoming Assembly elections," he added.

Jarange also accused Maharashtra cabinet minister and NCP leader Chhagan Bhujbal of uniting OBC leaders against the Maratha reservation. (PTI)

List of candidates fielded for Maharashtra Legislative Council polls

With the Shiv Sena (UBT) fielding Milind Narvekar as its candidate for the July 12 Maharashtra Legislative Council elections on the last day of filing of nominations on Tuesday, the Maha Vikas Aghadi will have three candidates in the fray though it has numbers to get only two candidates elected.

While the Congress has renominated Pradnya Satav, the wife of late Congress leader Rajeev Satav, the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) has decided to back Jayant Patil of the Peasants and Workers Party.

From the Mahayuti, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has fielded five candidates — Pankaja Munde, Amit Gorkhe, Yogesh Tilekar, Sadabhau Khot, and Dr Pranay Phuke.

The NCP led by Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has fielded Rajesh Vitekar and Shivajirao Garje.

The Shiv Sena of Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has fielded Bhavana Gawali, who was denied the Lok Sabha nomination despite having won five times from the Yavatmal-Washim constituency. The second Sena candidate is Krupal Tumane.

Confident of win of all 3 MVA candidates in Maharashtra council polls: Uddhav

Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Tuesday said the opposition MVA would not have fielded a third candidate in the upcoming polls to the Maharashtra legislative council had it not been confident of victory.

The biennial elections for 11 seats of the Upper House of the state legislature will be held on July 12. The six-year term of the 11 MLCs is due to end on July 27.

After a meeting with the MVA leaders to discuss the poll preparations, Thackeray said the opposition bloc has fielded Pradnya Satav (of Congress), Jayant Patil (Peasants and Workers Party) and Milind Narvekar (Shiv Sena UBT).

With the opposition's current strength in the 288-member legislative assembly, the electoral college for the polls, only two of its candidates can win the council polls. (PTI)

Maharashtra govt raises age cap to 65 years, drops agri land condition for Ladki Bahin scheme

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Tuesday said the age limit for the state government's Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana, a financial assistance scheme for women, has been increased to 65 years.

Speaking during a discussion in the legislative assembly, the chief minister said the condition regarding women whose families own government land has been removed.

The scheme, announced in the state budget tabled in the assembly by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, is aimed at married, divorced and destitute women in the 21-60 age group, who will get a monthly assistance of Rs 1,500.

Shinde said the age limit of beneficiaries has been increased to 65 years instead of the earlier 60, while the eligibility criterion for women whose families own agricultural land was scrapped. (PTI)

Monsoon covers entire India 6 days ahead of schedule: IMD

The southwest monsoon has covered the entire country six days ahead of the normal date, the India Meteorological Department said on Tuesday.

It progressed normally up to Maharashtra but lost momentum, extending the wait for rains in West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh, and worsening the impact of a scorching heat wave in northwest India.

The country recorded 16 days of below-normal rainfall activity -- from June 11 to June 27 -- which led to an overall below-normal precipitation in June, 147.2 mm of rainfall against a normal of 165.3 mm for the month, the seventh lowest since 2001. (PTI)

High time govt gives equal importance to sports than 'commercialisation mantra': Mumbai HC

Sports play a significant role in the development of people and nation and it is high time the government gives it equal importance than the "commercialisation and concretisation mantra", the Bombay High Court has said.

It quashed the Maharashtra government's 2021 decision to relinquish 20 acre land in Navi Mumbai for a 'Government Sports Complex' and shifting it to a remote place at Mangaon in Raigad district, 115 km from the existing site.

In 2003, the land was earmarked for the sports complex.

Zika virus cases reported in Pune, total tally rises to six

Zika virus continues to spread in Pune, with two more cases reported on Monday, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to six.

Both new cases involving pregnant women residing in Erandwane.

The first cases of Zika in Pune were reported by a doctor and his teenage daughter, who live in the same area as the two new cases. Following their positive test results, health officials conducted inspections and collected samples from the affected area.

Navi Mumbai: 41 unauthorised bars, restaurants demolished Thane

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) launched a massive crackdown on illegal bars, restaurants, and unauthorized structures across the city, demolishing 41 establishments and sealing 98 paan shops in a coordinated operation, officials said.

Maharashtra govt to include dental treatments in state health scheme

Maharashtra Minister Tanaji Sawant on Monday said dental treatment will now be covered under the Pradhan Mantra Jan Aarogya and Mahatma Phule Jan Aarogya schemes.

The state public health minister announced while responding to a question from legislator Satyajeet Tambe in the state legislative council.

This expansion broadens the coverage of the two schemes that provide a wide range of medical treatments free of cost at government-recognised hospitals.

"Currently, 1,000 private and state-run hospitals are recognised under the schemes. With the latest decision, 900 more hospitals will be included. The expansion is expected to be completed by July 31," Sawant said.

The state government is also working on developing an anti-fraud application to prevent hospitals from submitting bogus bills, he said.

Lonavala waterfall tragedy: All five bodies found

The bodies of all five people swept away in a waterfall near Bhushi Dam in Pune's Lonavala area were found today with that of the last missing person, a 4-year-old boy, being fished out in the evening, an official said.

The five, comprising a woman and four children, drowned at around 12.30 pm on Sunday and the bodies of three of them were recovered some hours later, while that of a girl was fished out earlier on Monday morning, he said.

"The body of Adnan Ansari was recovered this evening, after which the search operation was called off," said Suhas Jagtap, senior inspector of Lonavala police station.

The bodies of Shahista Liaqat Ansari (36), Amina Adil Ansari (13) and Umera Adil Ansari (8) were found by rescuers some hours after search-and-rescue operations started at the site on Sunday afternoon.

Maharashtra govt to unveil new policy for hoardings in Mumbai Metropolitan Region

The Maharashtra government will soon unveil a policy regarding hoardings in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), state Minister Uday Samant told the legislative assembly on Monday.

Samant made the statement during a discussion about hoardings erected in the city by violating rules and the hoarding collapse incident in which 17 people lost their lives last month.

"A policy will be unveiled once the code of conduct for the legislative council polls ends after the results are declared for the graduates and teachers constituencies," the minister said.

He said the committee headed by former Allahabad High Court chief justice Dilip Bhosle is probing the May 13 hoarding collapse in Mumbai's Ghatkopar area.

BJP legislator Ram Kadam alleged that Bhavesh Bhinde, whose firm erected the hoarding that collapsed, was photographed with Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray, and his role should also be probed.

Samant further said that permissions are not taken from the civic authorities to erect hoardings on railway land.

Of the 1,025 hoardings in Mumbai, 306 are on railway land, he said.

BJP leader Ashish Shelar demanded an inquiry into hoardings erected since the COVID-19 pandemic.

He alleged that hoarding owners received subsidies and a 50 per cent discount on licences.

State legislative council adjourned

The BJP and Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) legislators were engaged in a sharp exchange on Monday over Lok Sabha opposition leader Rahul Gandhi's "not Hindus" swipe at the BJP, resulting in the adjournment of Maharashtra legislative council for the day after frequent disruptions.

BJP legislator Prasad Lad raised the issue in the Council, saying Rahul Gandhi has insulted Hindus in the country and condemned his remarks, drawing a sharp reply from the leader of the opposition Ambadas Danve of Shiv Sena (UBT) and Congress legislators.

They objected to Lad raising Gandhi's comments on the floor and sought Deputy Chairperson Neelam Gorhe's intervention.

Lad also raised slogans against Rahul Gandhi. Amid the din, Gorhe adjourned the Council for five minutes at 4:25 pm.

After the House reassembled at around 4:30 pm, other BJP legislators including Pravin Darekar, joined Lad, forcing another adjournment for 10 minutes.

Man critical after tree falls on him in Mumbai

A 45-year-old man was critically injured when a tree fell on him while he was walking in Mumbai's Worli area today, police said.

The incident took place at around 9 am in Jambori Maidan lane near a chawl (row tenement), they said.

Pedestrian Amit Jagtap received injuries when a roadside tree fell on him, an official said.

Fire brigade and local police personnel rushed the spot after receiving information.

Jagtap was rushed to a hospital where he was undergoing treatment, the official said, adding the man's condition was critical.

BJP nominates Pankaja Munde and four others for Maharashtra council elections

Maharashtra BJP declared the candidacy of OBC leader and ex-minister Pankaja Munde, along with four others, for the forthcoming state legislative council elections.

The biennial elections for 11 seats of the Upper House of the state legislature are scheduled for July 12.

The party, in a release, named Munde, former MLA Yogesh Tilekar, Parinay Phuke, Amit Gorkhe and Sadabhau Khot as its candidates.

Fake visa racket case: Navy officer, 3 others arrested

The Crime Intelligence Unit of the Mumbai Crime Branch probing the fake visa racket allegedly being operated by Navy officers, arrested four persons, including one more Navy officer, on Saturday and Sunday.

The racket, allegedly involved in sending people to South Korea using forged documents, would tell them to tear up their visa papers once they reached there and seek asylum, which would then be followed by citizenship.

According to the crime branch, Sub-Lieutenant Braham Jyoti, posted in INS Shivaji Lonavla, said to be the mastermind of the racket, was arrested along with his associate Simran Teji.

Maharashtra Police register 1st FIR under new criminal law in Sawantwadi : Devendra Fadnavis

The first FIR in Maharashtra under the new Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) was registered by the Sawantwadi police in Sindhudurg district on Monday, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said in the state assembly.

He did not give details of the case.

Fadnavis, said in the House that the first FIR under the new criminal law provisions was registered at 2.19 am at the Sawantwadi police station.

Three new criminal laws came into effect on Monday, bringing far-reaching changes in India's criminal justice system.

Over 90 persons fall ill after consuming contaminated water in Maharashtra village

Rescue teams recover one of the two missing children in Lonavala; 4 family members dead

Four persons from a family, including three children, drowned in a waterfall behind the Bhushi Dam in Lonavala on Sunday afternoon.
