Mumbai News Live Updates: Maharashtra reported 1,045 new Covid-19 cases today. Of the new cases, Mumbai reported 704 infections. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray today called a Covid-19 task force meeting amid a surge in Covid cases in the state. For the first time since February, Maharashtra had recorded over 1,000 daily Covid-19 cases on Wednesday.

In another news, beloved Bollywood playback singer Krishnakumar Kunnath, popularly known as KK, was cremated in the presence of his family and members of the film fraternity on Thursday, at Mumbai’s Versova Hindu Cemetary. His funeral was attended by film industry personalities such as singers Shreya Ghoshal, Alka Yagnik, Harshdeep Kaur, Rahul Vaidya and Papon, directors Kabir Khan and Vishal Bhardwaj, lyricist Javed Akhtar, music directors Shankar Mahadevan and Salim Merchant, and others.

Taking on the BJP over the arrest of AAP Minister Satyender Jain by the ED, the Shiv Sena on Wednesday said that those who do not “dance to the tunes” of the BJP, the ED enters their “homes and imprisons” them.

Uddhav Thackeray tells district admin to resolve water supply issue in Aurangabad city

Days after the issue was raised by the Opposition, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray Thursday instructed the district administration to resolve water supply issue in Aurangabad city immediately. Thackeray also said stringent action will be taken against the contractor for negligence.

Thackeray on Thursday held a review meeting on the issue of water supply and water supply projects in Aurangabad city. “Don’t give me any reasons but resolve the issue immediately. In any case, residents of Aurangabad city should have proper water supply. It will take time for the completion of the new water supply scheme. So, the Divisional Commissioner should look into how much water can be added to the current water distribution and ensure that residents get water properly,” said Thackeray. Read More

Mumbai: After three decades of service, two naval warships to be decommissioned tomorrow

Maharashtra govt compensates 288 fishermen for releasing endangered marine species from their nets

The Maharashtra government has given compensation of Rs 44 lakh to as many as 288 fishermen — for setting protected marine species which were caught in their nets free – in the past three years. This is part of the state’s efforts to save the marine ecosystem and several protected species in it. The marine species released by the fishermen – from December 2018 till March this year — include Whale Shark, Giant Guitarfish, Humpback Dolphin and Indo-Pacific finless porpoise, among others. All of them are protected under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. Read more

Cheating case: Court grants interim protection from arrest to BJP functionary Mohit Kamboj

A court here on Wednesday granted interim protection from arrest till June 7 to former Mumbai BJP youth wing president Mohit Kamboj in a cheating and forgery case registered against him.

The Mumbai police on Tuesday registered an FIR against Kamboj and some other officials of a company and a bank on charges of cheating and forgery.

Fearing arrest in the case, Kamboj approached the sessions court, which granted him interim protection till the next hearing in the case on June 7.

The protection was granted on technical grounds that the FIR copy has not been shown to him, Kamboj's lawyer said.
Kamboj, however, claimed the FIR was fake and said his voice cannot be suppressed. (PTI)

Last rites of KK to be held in Mumbai on Thursday

The last rites of playback singer Krishnakumar Kunnath, known by his stage name KK, will be held here on Thursday, a source said.
      
KK passed away on Tuesday night at the age of 53, hours after his performance at an event in Kolkata. He was later brought to the CMRI hospital, where he was declared dead.

"His family said the last rites will be held in Mumbai at Versova cremation ground tomorrow morning,” the source told PTI. (PTI)

Newsmaker | Nupur Sharma: BJP firebrand now in a spot over FIR in Mumbai

Nupur Sharma, the BJP leader against whom Mumbai Police have registered an FIR for allegedly hurting religious sentiments over her remarks on the Prophet, has rarely been away from the spotlight.

The FIR, based on a complaint by Irfan Shaikh, joint secretary of the Mumbai wing of Raza Academy, states that Sharma, in a news debate on the Gyanvapi issue, allegedly made abusive comments about the Prophet. While Sharma has denied saying anything abusive or “wrong”, she claimed that she has been getting death and rape threats since the controversy broke out.

A graduate in economics from Delhi University’s Hindu College and LLB from the university’s Faculty of Law, Sharma, 37, also has a Master’s degree in law from the London School of Economics. Read more

Dharavi slum colony in Mumbai logs 10 Covid-19 cases

Dharavi slum colony in Mumbai reported 10 fresh COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, a Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) official said.
          
With the addition of new infections, the tally of active cases in Dharavi has jumped to 37.
        
Barring a few days, the slum-dominated area had reported zero COVID-19 cases in the first half of May. However, the daily infections went up steadily after May 15.
        
Dharavi's overall tally of COVID-19 cases since the outbreak of the pandemic stands at 8,707, the official said, adding that 8,252 patients have recovered so far and 419 died. (PTI)

Students in BMC-run schools to get new uniform this year, no need to wear tie any longer

AS THE schools start a new academic year in June after the Covid-19 pandemic, children studying in Mumbai Public Schools (MPS) run by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) are expected to get new uniforms. Instead of the blue colour themed uniform, which was in use for many years, the new uniform will now be in a shade of red with a cream colour background for shirts. From this academic year, students will no longer have to wear ties.

According to the information provided by officials from the Education Department at BMC, a committee was formed that included teachers, BMC officials and designers to decide on the new uniform. The idea was to bring about a change, which will be comfortable for students.

Yes Bank-DHFL fraud case: Pune realtor in CBI custody till June 8

PUNE-BASED builder Avinash Bhosale, arrested in the Yes Bank-DHFL ‘fraud’ case, was sent in the custody of the CBI till June 8. Bhosale was arrested on Thursday by the CBI. He was ordered to be lodged at the CBI’s guesthouse by the special court till it decided the plea by the agency to seek his remand and a separate application filed by Bhosale’s lawyers claiming that his arrest was illegal.
