Mumbai Maharashtra today News Highlights:  The Supreme Court allowed Election Commission of India to decide which faction between Uddhav Thackeray and Eknath Shinde be recognised as the ‘real’ Shiv Sena party and allotment of the bow and arrow symbol. The apex court declined to stay the proceedings before the Election Commission of India on Shinde group’s claim for recognition as ‘real’ Shiv Sena.

Police have arrested four activists of the Popular Front of India (PFI) from different locations in Maharashtra’s Thane district for alleged anti-national activities, an official said on Tuesday. The arrests were made on Monday night in a joint operation carried out in the district by local police and crime branch officials, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Laxmikant Patil said. Two of the activists were nabbed from Mumbra and one each from Kalyan and Bhiwandi towns, he said without elaborating.

The Supreme Court collegium led by Chief Justice of India U U Lalit, in its meeting held on September 26, recommended the elevation of Justice Dipankar Datta, Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court, as a Supreme Court judge. Justice Datta, who was a senior judge at the Calcutta High Court, was appointed as the Bombay High Court Chief Justice on April 28, 2020. He will be elevated to the apex court after the central government clears his appointment and issues a notification in this regard.

Mumbai crime branch busts racket reselling expired cosmetic products

The Mumbai crime branch Monday conducted raids at three godowns in the city and arrested one person for allegedly importing expired cosmetic products from abroad.

The accused used to allegedly add stickers on the expired product’s date and sell them in the city.

An officer said three teams from the Mumbai crime branch conducted simultaneous raids at seven godowns located at Goregaon, Crawford market and Dana Bunder in south Mumbai. The godowns were linked to the firms National Impex and MS International. The products the teams seized were worth Rs 3.28 crore.

SC ruling no relief for Shinde camp as plea for disqualification of MLAs pending: Congress

The Congress in Maharashtra said the Supreme Court's ruling allowing the Election Commission to decide the Shiv Sena's party symbol will not benefit the faction led by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde as the issue of disqualification of 16 rebel MLAs not resolved yet.

"The issue of eligibility of 16 MLAs, including Eknath Shinde, has not been resolved yet. The sword of disqualification is hanging on them," Maharashtra Congress chief spokesperson Atul Londhe said in a statement. (PTI)

The Maharashtra government doubled the scholarship to Rs 50,000 for students from minority communities who are pursuing higher education.

In 2011, the scholarship for students from minority communities pursuing higher education was Rs 25,000.

Shiv Sena symbol row: Fight for truth will continue, says Aaditya Thackeray

Shiv Sena leader Aaditya Thackeray said the Supreme Court allowing the Election Commission to hear the plea of the faction led by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde cannot be construed as a victory for either camp. He said the battle for truth will continue in the Election Commission of India (ECI).

"The arguments in the case will have a far-reaching impact on the democratic principles in the country. We stand for truth and truth will prevail. The stage for arguments has shifted from the court to ECI. We are ready for the hearing. We have faith in the judiciary. We believe in the Constitution and will fight the battle for truth with all our might," he told reporters. (PTI)

Water supply in Malabar Hill affected

Water supply in the Malabar Hill neighbourhood was affected on Tuesday, after a water valve leakage was reported at around 7.15 pm.

The incident affected the water supply at Ritz Road in Malabar Hill. Civic officials said that repair works are underway, following which supply will be restored.

Study on Maharashtra’s Vengurla Rocks explores conservation options

A study commissioned by the Mangrove and Marine Biodiversity Conservation Foundation of Maharashtra on the ecologically vulnerable Vengurla Rocks in Sindhudurg district of Konkan Maharashtra prompted the foundation to look into options for better protecting and conserving the area.

Between January and June 2020, researchers Shirish Manchi, Goldin Quadros and Dhanusha Kawalkarthe of the Salim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History (SACON) explored the island of the Vengurla rocks region and discovered four caves. Read more

Mumbai Police cautions against posting pics of half-dissolved idols that get washed ashore

Cabinet nod likely for distribution of fortified rice via PDS

The state cabinet is likely to clear a proposal on Tuesday allowing distribution of fortified rice through the public distribution network. The food and civil supplies department of the state had started a pilot project for the same two years back in Gadchiroli.

A senior government officer said that the cost of the rice that will be taken from the public will be the same – Rs 2 and Rs 3 per kilo and the Centre will take the financial load. He added that for every kilo of rice, ten grams of fortified rice will be added. Read more

Use of loudspeakers till midnight permitted in Mumbai on Oct 1 during Navratri

The Maharashtra government allowed the use of loudspeakers till midnight during the ongoing Navratri festival on October 1 also, apart from October 3 and 4, in Mumbai.

Under the Environment and Climate Change Department's Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Revised Rules, 2017, the concerned district collectors have been authorized to announce exemptions for the use of loudspeakers on any 15 days in a year from 6 am to 12 pm. (PTI)

Mumbai sees 85 new Covid-19 cases, zero fatality

Mumbai on Tuesday recorded 85 new coronavirus cases that raised the tally of infections to 11,49,917, as per BMC data.

The toll remained unchanged at 19,730, while the count of recoveries rose to 11,29,505 after 120 patients recovered from the infection in the last 24 hours. With a recovery rate of 98.2 per cent, the city is now left with 682 active cases.

Minimum fares of taxis and autos to be hiked by Rs 3 and Rs 2 from Oct 1

From October 1, residents of Mumbai will have to pay Rs 28 as the minimum fare for travelling in taxis and Rs 23 for auto rickshaws, with the basic fares being hiked by Rs 3 and Rs 2 respectively.

The minimum fare for a distance of 1.5 km for kaali-peeli taxis has been hiked to Rs 28 from Rs 25 and the same to Rs 23 from Rs 21 for auto-rickshaws.

"Beyond this minimum flag down distance, passengers will have to pay Rs 18.66 per km instead of Rs 16.93 per km for taxis and Rs 15.33 a km instead of 14.20 (per km) for auto-rickshaws," the release said.

Shiv Sena symbol row: Will respect court orders, says Thackeray faction's Chandrakant Khaire

Chandrakant Khaire, a leader in the Shiv Sena faction led by former CM Uddhav Thackeray said the party respects the court's orders and will submit the required evidence with the Election Commission.

Meanwhile, Shiv Sena leader Anil Desai said, "There was a good argument in the court. We are prepared to win the battle in Election Commision of India."

Chandrakant Khaire, the Thackeray led Shiv Sena said that they respect the court's orders and they will submit the evidence in the ECI.

The Shiv Sena faction led by CM Eknath Shinde camp termed the Supreme Court's direction to the Election Commission to decide on the allocation of the party symbol a victory for them. 
 
"The rejection of plea filed by Shiv Sena (Uddhav Thackeray faction) is an answer for them. These are the Constitutional authorities who work as per the procedure and challenging such proceedings (of ECI) was no good. The decision is good and we welcome it," Maharashtra minister and Shinde camp spokesperson Deepak Kesarkar said.

Eknath Shinde welcomes SC direction to EC to decide on allocating Shiv Sena symbol

Maharashtra CM welcomed the Supreme Court's decision directing the Election Commission to take a call on allotting the Shiv Sena symbol among the Eknath Shinde and Uddhav Thackeray factions.

Shinde said, "In a democracy, the majority is important and we have the majority in state Assembly. Whatever decisions are taken in this country are based on Constitution and this decision is also based on that. The ECI is an independent body. The constitutional experts also believed that whatever decision we have take is not wrong or illegal. So we welcome the decision."

The Mumbai Metro 3 trial run will extend till Sahar station once the crossover track is ready. Executive Director, Planning, MMRC, R Ramana said, “By November, the crossover track work is most likely to be completed. With the availability of crossover, the Metro rakes will be able to change from one track to another.” Meanwhile, the second rake from Sri city of Andhra Pradesh will arrive soon, he added.

She said, “The decision given by the judiciary should be respected especially by Rane, as he is a Union minister and former chief minister of Maharashtra.” Pednekar said Rane should now demolish all unauthorised portions in his residence.

Sena MLA’s car ‘attacked’, 10 Shiv Sainiks arrested

Ten Shiv Sena members from the Uddhav Thackeray faction were arrested by Anjangaon police in Amravati on Monday for allegedly attacking the vehicle of MLA Santosh Bangar, who is part of Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s faction. The incident took place Sunday when Hingoli MLA Bangar, along with his wife and sister, went to visit Shri Devnath Maharaj Math in Anjangaon. He was leaving the area when a few Shiv Sena members allegedly started hitting his car even as on-duty police officers tried to stop them.

Man dupes many by posing as govt official, held

A 30-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly posing as a government servant and duping several people. The police said the accused would either pose as a BMC or a Navy officer and under the pretext of facilitating flats or mobile phones at a cheaper rate, would take money and escape. According to police officials, the accused, identified as Shamik Mangle, who originally hails from Wardha, is a frequent visitor of dance bars while he is also addicted to gambling and would splash all the money earned by conning people over there.

A special court, in its detailed order rejecting the application of Telugu poet and Elgaar Parishad accused Varavara Rao to travel and stay in his hometown Hyderabad, has said that if he is allowed to go, the framing of charges in the case would get prolonged. The court had last week rejected Rao’s plea seeking permission to travel and stay in his hometown for three months to undergo cataract surgery.

A special court Monday sent five accused to the custody of the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) till October 3 in connection with their alleged links to the Popular Front of India (PFI). The ATS also arrested another accused Monday, Mohammed Abed Ali Mohammead Mehboob Ali. He is the 21st arrest in the case in the state. On Monday, the ATS told the court that it wants to probe whether the accused have links to Al Qaeda and the Islamic State. It also said that in the past five days, it had taken copies of the accused’s social media and electronic devices for an analysis.
