A 20-year-old woman was raped and assaulted by an autorickshaw driver at a beach in neighbouring Palghar district, police said on Friday.

The police have arrested the accused for the assault that took place at Vasai Beach earlier this week, an official said.

The official said the woman was spotted near Goregaon railway station here on Wednesday morning, and when questioned, she informed the police about the rape. (PTI)

Reports from the Ordnance Factory in Bhandara district indicate that a roof collapse following an explosion has left 13 to 14 workers trapped. So far, five workers have been safely rescued. The District Collector and Superintendent of Police are at the site, providing all necessary assistance.

Teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and Nagpur Municipal Corporation have been called in for rescue operations and are expected to arrive shortly. The district administration, in coordination with the defense forces, is actively involved in the relief efforts. Medical teams have also been kept on standby to provide necessary aid.

As per preliminary information, one worker has unfortunately lost their life in this incident. My heartfelt condolences go out to the deceased worker. We stand with their family in this moment of grief. I pray for the speedy recovery of those injured in this tragic accident.

A Mumbai court has extended the police custody of Shareeful Islam Shehzad Mohammad Rohilla Amin Fakir, the 30-year-old Bangladeshi man arrested for allegedly stabbing Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan during a robbery attempt at his home last week. The accused, who was arrested in Thane, was presented before a Bandra magistrate’s court at the end of his previous remand. The police requested an additional seven days of custody, citing the need for further investigation into key aspects of the case. The court granted the request, extending Fakir’s custody until January 29. Police revealed that Fakir had entered India illegally last year and had adopted the name Vijay Das. (With PTI inputs)

The Bandra police on Friday presented Shariful Islam in court that remanded him in police custody till January 29. Islam was arrested for attacking Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan.

A blast at an ordnance factory in Maharashtra’s Bhandara district on Friday morning has claimed the life of one person, according to police. The explosion occurred around 10:30 am, and rescue teams have been deployed to the site to assist survivors. District collector Sanjay Kolte confirmed the incident, stating that efforts are ongoing to manage the aftermath. Further details on the casualties and cause of the explosion are yet to be confirmed.

The Ministry of Railways on Thursday formed a five-member committee of higher administrative grade (HAG) officials of the Central Railway to investigate the Jalgaon incident, where 12 passengers of Mumbai-bound Pushpak Express who got off on tracks died after being run over by Karnataka Express on Wednesday. The passengers got off following an alarm-chain pulling incident.

Sources said that the Commission of Railway Safety (CRS), under the Ministry of Civil Aviation, which has statutory powers to investigate railway accidents, will not take up this case as this is an “incident”, not an “accident”.

The inquiry committee comprises Principal Chief Safety Officer (PCSO), Principal Chief Security Commissioner (PCSC), Principal Chief Electrical Engineer (PCEE), Principal Chief Mechanical Engineer (PCME) and Principal Chief Commercial Manager (PCCM) of Central Railway. Officials said that PCSO will serve as a convenor of the committee.

The Bombay High Court Thursday granted bail to a 32-year-old “highly educated” man booked for driving in an inebriated state, and ordered him to undergo community service by standing at a busy traffic junction in Central Mumbai’s Worli area every weekend for three months.

A single-judge bench of Justice Milind N Jadhav passed the order on a plea by Sabyasachi Nishank, an IIM-Lucknow graduate working as a senior vice-president of a Non-Banking Finance Company (NBFC). The applicant had been in jail since November 2024 after he was booked under charges of rash driving, damaging public property, and disobeying police officers under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

“This is to create and spread awareness and message about the ills of drinking and driving and its harmful effects,” Justice Jadhav noted. (Read More)
