With the resignation of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) minister Dhananjay Munde over the Beed sarpanch murder row, the Mahayuti government in Maharashtra, led by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, may have heaved a sigh of relief. However, its troubles have hardly died down as the demand for the ouster of another NCP minister, Manikrao Kokate, continues to grow.

Last month, the Nashik district court convicted state Agriculture Minister Kokate to two years’ imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on him in a case of housing fraud. This means that within three months of the Mahayuti government taking charge, two of its Cabinet ministers have already landed in the dock, providing fodder for Opposition attacks. Who is Manikrao Kokate?

A five-term MLA, Manikrao Kokate, 67, represents the Sinnar Assembly constituency in Nashik district. He was made the Agriculture Minister in the Mahayuti government considering his rural background and understanding of the sector.

Kokate has repeatedly hopped between parties. In the 2024 Assembly elections, he contested against the breakaway faction NCP(SP) candidate Uday Sangale and won comfortably, polling 56.93 per cent of the votes as opposed to Sangale’s 40.13 per cent.

In the 2019 Assembly polls, Kokate had contested for the undivided NCP from Sinnar and won, defeating Rajabhau Wagh of the undivided Shiv Sena. Kokate started his political career with the Congress in the early 1990s. In 1999, he joined the newly formed NCP led by Sharad Pawar but was denied an Assembly ticket from Sinnar that year. He then joined Shiv Sena and won the election. In the subsequent polls in 2004, he won again as a Shiv Sena candidate.

In 2006, Kokate joined the Congress. In 2009, Kokate won the Assembly polls again from Sinnar as a Congress candidate. At the height of the Narendra Modi wave, he joined the right-wing party. He contested the seat again as a BJP candidate in 2014 but lost to Shiv Sena’s Rajabhau Waje. Following this, he contested as an Independent from Nashik in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls and lost again. Within six months, he joined the undivided NCP. In July 2023, he pledged support to the NCP faction led by Ajit Pawar.

Despite his party-hopping nature, Kokate is a relatively low-profile politician whose poll affidavit describes him as a farmer. He completed his BSc and LLB from the University of Pune in 1984. Santosh Deshmukh, a sarpanch from Beed, was brutally tortured and murdered on December 9.

The crime was allegedly carried out by a gang linked to NCP leader Dhananjay Munde’s aide, Walmik Karad.

15 videos & 8 photographs capturing the torture were found and included in the chargesheet.

Motive Behind the Murder- The gang was extorting money from local industries, including a windmill energy project by Avaada Energy.

Deshmukh had intervened and stopped them from disrupting the project, angering the accused.

To intimidate others, they recorded videos of the crime to use as a threat.

The CID SIT (led by DIG Dr. Basavaraj Teli) filed the chargesheet against eight accused, including Karad.

Accused Sudarshan Ghule was allegedly ordered to “take care of Deshmukh” on December 7.

The torture videos, recorded on December 9 (3:46 PM – 5:53 PM), range from 5 seconds to 2 minutes 4 seconds.

Videos show Deshmukh being beaten with weapons (wrench pipe, kicks, punches).

A person in a black T-shirt is seen stripping Deshmukh and urinating on him.

Accused forced Deshmukh to say, “Sudarshan Ghule ha sarvancha baap aaheyt” (Sudarshan Ghule is everyone’s father).

The victim was last seen wearing a white-grey checkered shirt and was later stripped to his underwear.

He was abducted in a light-colored Scorpio vehicle (Number plate: F 333).

The CID SIT confirmed the accused’s identities through the videos.

The Opposition in Maharashtra demanded Dhananjay Munde be named as an accused.

Munde resigned as minister, but SIT sources ruled out adding new names unless further evidence emerges.

Invocation of urgency clause to acquire land for Navi Mumbai airport's ancillary work unlawful, says HC

The Bombay High Court on Tuesday questioned the Maharashtra government and the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) for arbitrarily invoking the urgency clause of a law to acquire land for the upcoming Navi Mumbai international airport's ancillary work.

A division bench of Justices M S Sonak and Jitendra Jain held the acquisition process illegal and quashed Section 6 declaration under the Land Acquisition Act issued in May 2015 and the subsequent award of July 2017.

Section 6 says the government can declare that a particular land is required urgently for a public project.

The bench was hearing a bunch of petitions filed by agriculturists from Vahal village in Panvel taluka of Raigad district whose lands were acquired for ancillary and allied works related to the airport, including setting up of a sewage treatment plant. --PTI

Abu Azmi retracts remark on Aurangzeb after uproar in assembly as Mahayuti seeks treason charge

The Mahayuti's uproar in the state Assembly following Samajwadi Party MLA Abu Azmi's alleged praise of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb prompted the legislator to retract his statements. Both the Houses of the state legislature were adjourned for the day over the issue.

In a post on X, Azmi alleged that his statements were twisted and politicised, saying, "Whatever I have said about Aurangzeb is something that has been stated by historians and writers. I have not made any derogatory remarks against Shivaji Maharaj, Sambhaji Maharaj or any national icons. Still, if anyone is hurt by my remarks, then I take back my statements and comments."

He said that disrupting the budget session due to this is a loss of people of Maharashtra.

In Delhi, the BJP latched on to Azmi's remarks, stating that they could stoop down to any level in their bid to "eradicate" Sanatan Dharma.

Deputy Minister Eknath Shinde condemned the statements after the houses were adjourned.

Mumbai News Live Updates: Maratha outfit stages protest in Latur; demands capital punishment for accused

Activists of Sakal Maratha, a Maratha outfit, staged a protest in Maharashtra's Latur district demanding that former minister and NCP leader Dhananjay Munde be named co-accused in the Beed sarpanch murder case.

The protesters also demanded capital punishment for the accused involved in the killing and called for Munde to be named as a co-accused in the murder case.

The group staged a sit-in agitation at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Chowk in Latur, shouting slogans against Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and Munde.

Santosh Deshmukh, 45, a village sarpanch from Beed district who was murdered on December 9, belonged to the Maratha community. He was allegedly murdered for allegedly opposing an extortion bid in Beed.

Investigation revealed that Walmik Karad - Dhananjay Munde's aide - was the masterminded the murder.

Since December, the district has seen multiple protests from the opposition and event members of the ruling coalition. Notably, Deshmukh was a BJP supporter.

The protests and controversy culminated in the resignation of Karad from his ministerial post earlier today. He was chosed for the cabinet position on December 14, five days after the murder took place.

A chargesheet has disclosed that the Beed Sarpanch murder case's mastermind Walmik Karad - a confidant of former Maharashtra minister and NCP leader Dhananjay Munde - had set up multiple a network of criminal gangs in the district to extort money from development projects.

A secret witness told the CID that failure to pay extortion money would invite would trouble for Karad's victims. He would abduct or assault them, the chargesheet quoting the witness saying. The statements of as many as five secret witnesses are part of the chargesheet.

The chargesheet was filed in Deshmukh's murder and two related cases, one of them of extortion, last week before a court in Beed district in central Maharashtra.

In his statement, one of the witnesses said that Karad treated the district as his fiefdom.

Deshmukh, 45, sarpanch of Massajog village in Beed district, was abducted, tortured and murdered on December 9 last year allegedly for attempting to stop an extortion bid targeting an energy company.

Since, then there have been protests and demands from the opposition for the resignation of Munde, who has been caught in the storm.

Earlier today, before the budget session commenced, CM Devendra Fadnavis told that media that Munde resigned as the state's Food and Civil Supplies Minister.

Jadhav, the MLA from Guhagar in Ratnagiri district, was in the united Shiv Sena in the 1990s. He joined the undivided NCP few years following the 2004 elections and was fielded in the 2009 from Guhagar constituency. He then went on to become NCP's state president before coming back the Shiv Sena in 2019.

On Monday, NCP (SP) the LoP post be shared on a rotational basis.

In the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance, Thackeray's party has the highest number of seats in the assembly - 20 - followed by Congress (16) and NCP (SP) (10).

In a written reply to the lower house during the state Budget session, CM Devendra Fadnavis, who also the state's home minister, informed that 36 murder cases were registered in Beed district from January to October 2024

Fadnavis said 275 cases of murder and 766 attempted murder cases were registered in the district in the last five years.

He also noted that as many as 260 persons involved in these cases held arms licences. He said that 199 licences of permit holders, including deceased persons, were suspended or cancelled after the cases were registered.

As the Opposition in Maharashtra demanded that Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Dhananjay Munde, who resigned as a minister on Tuesday, be named an accused in the Beed sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh murder case, sources in the special investigation team (SIT) that probed the case said it was unlikely that new names would be added to the chargesheet with the evidence in hand.

“The chargesheet names eight accused against whom we have found evidence in connection with the murder of Santosh Deshmukh. Based on the evidence so far, no new names will be added. Unless some new evidence crops up, the chargesheet will have no new names,” a source from the SIT said.

Asked why the chargesheet has been kept open for investigation under Section 193 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, the official said that it was because one of the accused, Krushna Andhale, was still on the run. “Once he is arrested, another chargesheet will be filed detailing his role in the case,” an official said.

Deshmukh, the sarpanch of Massajog village in Beed district, was murdered on December 9, allegedly after he tried to prevent an extortion attempt. Seven of the eight accused in the case have been arrested.

The Bombay High Court on Tuesday granted a four-week stay on a special court’s directive to file an FIR against former Sebi chairperson Madhabi Puri Buch and five other officials in connection with alleged stock market fraud and regulatory violations.

The court noted that the special court had issued its order mechanically without examining the details or assigning specific roles to the accused.

Justice Shivkumar Dige, presiding over a single-judge bench, observed that the special court’s March 1 order lacked detailed reasoning. “Hence, the order is stayed till the next hearing.

The complainant, Sapan Shrivastava, is granted four weeks to file an affidavit in response to the petitions,” the court ruled says PTI reports.

The high court’s decision came in response to petitions filed by Buch, three current SEBI whole-time directors—Ashwani Bhatia, Ananth Narayan G, and Kamlesh Chandra Varshney—as well as two BSE officials, Managing Director and CEO Sundararaman Ramamurthy, and former chairman and public interest director Pramod Agarwal.

The petitions sought the quashing of the special court’s order, which had instructed the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) to register an FIR over alleged financial fraud linked to the 1994 listing of a company on the BSE. Read

Munde, who had been facing the heat for over three months after his close aide Walmik Karad was arrested in a case related to the murder, cited his ill health for the decision, adding that he was “deeply saddened” by the photos.

“Minister Dhananjay Munde has submitted his resignation to me. I have accepted it. I have sent it to the governor for further action,” Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said after arriving at the Legislative Assembly on Tuesday. Fadnavis left without addressing the media.
