Mumbai News Highlights: A day after the Maharashtra bandh planned for today was called off by the Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray has claimed the state government is “standing with the culprits” rather than taking action against the alleged sexual assault of two four-year-old girls at a school in Thane’s Badlapur. He was addressing a mute protest in Mumbai, while Nationalist Congress Party (SP) chief Sharad Pawar led a similar protest in Pune with other MVA leaders including MP Supriya Sule.

Why was the bandh called off? Calling the planned bandh “unconstituional”, the Bombay High Court on Friday said the state government shall take all necessary steps to restrain any political party or individuals from proceeding with it on August 24 or any other subsequent date. Several leaders of the MVA comprising NCP (SP), Congress and expressed disagreement over the Bombay HC ruling but said they respect the court’s orders. Sharad Pawar said the bandh was an attempt to draw the government’s attention to the matter, but it is not possible to appeal in the Supreme Court now due to time constraints. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said that the Bombay High Court’s order was a slap in the face for the Opposition.

Badlapur school sexual abuse live: Crimes against women, kids rising in Maharashtra, perpetrators have no fear of law says Wadettiwar

Leader of Opposition in Maharashtra Assembly Vijay Wadettiwar claimed on Saturday that crimes against women and children in the state are rising and perpetrators have no fear of the law.

He alleged that those occupying the chairs of the chief minister and deputy CMs do not deserve the posts.

The Congress leader was speaking to reporters about the recent sexual crimes against women and children, including the Badlapur incident that has caused a massive outrage.

Wadettiwar claimed there is no “law and order in the state”. Such incidents have brought shame to Maharashtra, he said.

Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has time to address Ladki Bahin Yojana programmes (a women-centric initiative) but he has no time to meet the families of the victims, the leader of the opposition said.

“Most such crimes are happening in Thane, and the perpetrators are Shiv Sena supporters. They seem to have no fear, as their leader holds the top post,” he said.

The opposition was using the sexual assault on two schoolgirls in Badlapur in Thane to target the women-centric Ladki Bahin Yojana of the Maharashtra government, BJP leader Chitra Wagh alleged on Friday.

Mumbai News Live Updates: Anil Ambani banned from Indian securities market for 5 years

Meanwhile, India's markets regulator late on Thursday banned Anil Ambani, one of India's best-known businessmen, and 24 others from the securities market for five years on charges of diversion of funds.

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) also imposed a fine of 250 million rupees (about $3 million) on Ambani, saying he orchestrated a scheme to "siphon off" funds from Reliance Home Finance Ltd, a listed subsidiary of conglomerate Reliance Group of which he is chairman.

The ban means Ambani and the others affected are restrained from accessing the securities market and prohibited from buying, selling, or otherwise dealing in securities, directly or indirectly, the regulator said.

The regulator said the "fraudulent" scheme was to "siphon off" funds from Reliance Home Finance, which provides loans for housing and construction, by structuring those funds as loans to credit-unworthy borrowers.

Most of these borrowers were linked to "promoters", an Indian term for large shareholders with the ability to influence company decisions, the SEBI added.

Mumbai News Live Updates: Shiv Sena chief demands withdrawal of cases against protesters

Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Friday demanded the withdrawal of the cases against those who had protested in Badlapur against the alleged sexual abuse of two kindergarten girls at a local school.

Addressing a news conference, Thackeray said the August 24 ‘Maharashtra Bandh' called by the opposition bloc Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) is against "perversion" and urged people cutting across caste and religion to participate in it.

He said the bandh should be “strictly” followed till 2 pm, ensuring that emergency services remain operational.

Slamming the Eknath Shinde government for “still making arrests” in connection with the Badlapur protest, Thackeray said, “The cases against the protesters must be withdrawn.” A massive protest rocked Badlapur town in Thane district on Tuesday after thousands of people hit the streets and spilled onto railway tracks to protest the alleged sexual assault of two four-year-old girls by a male attendant at a local school.

At least 25 police personnel were injured in the incidents of stone-pelting at the railway station and other parts of Badlapur during the protest. Police have arrested 72 persons in connection with the violence during the stir.

The accused was arrested on August 17. He has been sent to police custody till August 26.

Mumbai News Live Updates: FIR filed against Badlapur school by SIT investigating the case

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed to investigate the Badlapur child sexual assault case, has filed an FIR against the school authority under POCSO Act for not reporting the sexual assault of the two kids to the police as mandated under the POCSO Act, a senior IPS officer from Thane police has confirmed.

This comes a day after the Bombay High Court on Thursday asked the state government if offences were invoked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act against the school where the alleged incident occurred.

"We find that there is not only delay in the registration of the FIR, but there also appears to be non reporting of the incident of sexual assault by the School Authorities. This is apparent from a perusal of the FIR, which shows that the School Authorities were well aware of the said incident of sexual assault. However, despite the same, the School Authorities failed to report the same to the police," a division bench led by Justice Revati Mohite-Dere of the HC had noted in the order on Suo Motu PIL initiated by it taking cognisance of news reports on the incident.

Mumbai News Live Updates: ABVP opposes ‘abrupt and irrational' ban on student body PSF by TISS

The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), a student organization affiliated with the RSS, has voiced its opposition to the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) banning the Progressive Students Forum (PSF). Mumbai News Live Updates: Sharad Pawar says Z plus security an attempt to get ‘authentic information'

NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar has said that the Z plus security cover accorded to him could be an arrangement to get “authentic information” about him as Maharashtra assembly polls are around the corner.

The Centre on Wednesday accorded Z plus – the highest category of armed VIP security cover – to Pawar, official sources had said.

Asked about the security upgrade for him, the 83-year-old politician told the media in Navi Mumbai on Thursday that he wasn't aware of the reason behind the move.

“A home ministry official told me that the government has decided to give three persons Z plus security and I was one of them. I asked who the other two were. I was told RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat and Union home minister Amit Shah,” said Pawar.

“Maybe since elections are approaching, this can be an arrangement to get authentic information (about me),” he quipped.

A team of 55 armed personnel from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has been earmarked as part of Pawar's Z plus security cover. A threat assessment review by central agencies had recommended a strong security cover for Pawar, official sources had said earlier.

The VIP security cover categorisations begin from the highest Z+ followed by Z, Y+, Y and X.
