The Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Ltd (MMMOCL), which takes care of the operations and maintenance of the newly launched Metro Line 2A and 7 that runs from Andheri to Dahisar on the east and west side of the suburbs of Mumbai, has decided to rent out pillars of these elevated lines to telecom companies.
By doing so, the city’s telecom connectivity will improve and at the same time the MMMOCL will earn revenue which will be useful for the upkeep of the Metro services as part of its non-fare box revenue model (revenue earned through non-ticketing fares)
Under the initiative, the first 12 pillars have been allotted to Indus Towers, the MMMOCL said Friday.
A company has signed a Letter of Acceptance (LOA) with MMMOCL, which is expected to generate additional non-fare box revenue of approximately Rs 1 crore over the next 10 years (12 pillars).
To enhance network connectivity, MMMOCL has released a small/micro-cells policy, which allows for licensing spaces for telecom equipment installation on 1,500 pillars located along the 35-kilometre-long route of Line 2A and 7 elevated corridors of the Mumbai Metro. The initiative aims to improve network connectivity drastically, ensuring convenient and seamless communication services for commuters and the public.
Moreover, the MMMOCL is planning soon to license additional installation of telecom towers on its pillars for interested agencies so as to generate revenue of Rs 120 crore in the next 10 years.
The installation of small/micro cells on Mumbai Metro’s pillars is expected to generate additional revenue for MMMOCL, which will prove helpful in keeping the metro affordable for its commuters while providing them with top-notch facilities.
It is pertinent to note that the Maha Mumbai Metro has been successful in generating non-fare box revenue of Rs 1,500 crore for the next 15 years, and this initiative is expected to add to this revenue.
According to S V R Srinivas, MMMOCL Chief Managing Director (CMD) the initiative delivers a win-win situation for commuters and MMMOCL. “The network connectivity is expected to get better, delivering a flawless experience for commuters. Also, the revenue generated from the initiative will help keep the Metro affordable for commuters while enriching their experience with better facilities,” Srinivas said.
This initiative will benefit Metro commuters and people living around the link road and Western Express Highway.
