A 48-year-old man employed as a driver allegedly killed his wife and injured his daughter-in-law in their Nallasopara apartment, allegedly because the wife returned home late after Ambedkar Jayanti celebrations on Thursday.
Investigators from the Thane Rural police station said the accused was identified as Rajendra Sawant (48), a driver with a private company in Mumbai. He was arrested by the police shortly after he allegedly committed the crime.
According to investigators, Rajendra was married to Ranjana (40) for more than 15 years. The two were reportedly having several arguments recently.
“The family members have recorded in their statements that the couple’s fights had escalated since the beginning of the year. The couple reportedly had arguments every day. On Thursday, they were arguing again over why Ranjana had returned so late and it lasted for at least 30 minutes. Rajendra ended the argument by slitting the throat of his wife using a kitchen knife,” said a senior police officer.
After attacking his wife, Rajendra also slashed the back and wrists of his daughter-in-law Aruna who had witnessed the murder, police said.
“Aruna was injured on her back and arm. The neighbours intervened when she shouted for help. Ranjana was rushed to a hospital in Nallasopara (east) but was declared dead before arrival,” an investigator claimed.
