Mumbai: Locals protest after body of missing girl found in Uran
The police have also sent teams to Karnataka where Shaikh hails from to track him down.
The deceased has been identified as Atul Yogendra Prasad, a Class 9 student. According to details, Prasad was playing outside his house situated at Pardi GIDC on November 27. A DAY after the body of a 20-year-old woman, Yashashri Shinde, was found dumped in the bushes at Uran in Navi Mumbai, local residents in the area observed a bandh in protest. They also marched to the Uran police station in protest against the suspected accused in the case not being arrested as yet. The police have formed three teams that have fanned out across the country to track him.
Shinde, who worked at a company in Belapur, had been reported missing by her family at the Uran police station on Friday as she had not returned home since she left for work on Thursday. As the police team started looking for her, they received a call about the body of a woman being found in the area. Her parents identified the body to be that of Shinde.
The girl’s parents told the police that in 2019, based on their complaint, an FIR was registered against one Dawood Shaikh under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. DCP Vivek Pansare said that Shaikh was released from prison in 2022 and he had established contacts with Shinde again.
The officer said that the duo remained in touch and on the day she went missing, he had come to the area and the duo had met. “As per our probe, they were sitting and talking near the spot where her body was found. We suspect they got into a fight following which he may have stabbed her and fled,” an officer said. Due to heavy rains, the body of the girl had been heavily decomposed by the time it was found.
The police then began looking for Shaikh and found his mobile switched off. The police have also sent teams to Karnataka where Shaikh hails from to track him down. “Currently he remains the prime suspect in the case. Only once we arrest him will there be clarity on the motive behind the murder. We should be able to arrest him soon,” the officer said.
