The four men who allegedly attempted to drown a policeman in Kalyan were produced before a local court on Thursday with heavy security, amid fears of a possible attack on them.
“We had received information that a large crowd may gather at Kalyan court and someone might throw ink at the accused. So we deployed security to ensure their safety,” said an officer at Kolshewadi police station.
A magistrate at Kalyan court remanded the men to police custody till September 15. The accused — Bandesh Gaikwad, Nayan Gaikwad, Naresh Gaikwad and Rahul Gaikwad — were arrested Wednesday evening after they attacked Sub-inspector Nitin Dagde during Ganpati immersion in Kalyan’s Tees Gaon locality on Tuesday.
Dagde had told the accused to stop playing music after the 10 pm deadline, after which they refused to immerse their idol and prevented the queue of other devotees from moving. In order to manage the swelling crowd around the pool, Dagde then began to immerse idols himself, which angered the accused.
The police said that one of them then threw himself at Dagde and pushed him into the pool, where he repeatedly pushed his head underwater. After Dagde shook him off and swam to safety, the other three men manhandled him. ENS
