A 13-year-old girl was killed and three other schoolchildren were injured in a hit-and-run near Marve beach on Tuesday morning. The accident took place at 8 am at a junction on Marve Road near the beach. The children, all of whom lived in Malwani, were walking towards the beach. “They were crossing the road when a truck speeding towards Marve crashed into them,” said Deepak Phatangare, senior inspector, Malwani police station. The driver of the truck drove away without stopping to help the children, the police said.
Locals who witnessed the accident rushed the children to a nearby hospital, where 13-year-old Muskan Memon was declared dead upon admission. The three other injured children are siblings. The police said that Neha Menali (13) is in a serious condition while Kamal Menali (12) and Bhupendra Menali (9), suffered minor injuries.
The police said that the injured children are being treated at Nair Hospital and that Kamla and Bhupendra are expected to be discharged soon. Phatangare said that the locals who helped the children noted down the registration number of the truck and informed the police.
“We are using the licence number and CCTV footage from the road to identify the vehicle and locate the driver,” said Phatangare.The police said that the children were students of the Malwani Municipal School in Gaikwad Nagar, two kilometres from the site of the accident. The police registered a case of causing death due to negligence and rash and negligent driving, under the Indian Penal Code.
