The fourth edition of Bhendi Bazaar Urdu festival will commence from February 17. Organised by Urdu Markaz, the three day festival is scheduled to take place from February 17-19 at Dongri’s Imamwada Urdu Municipal School.
The festival will be inaugurated by script writer, lyricist, Urdu poet and Padma Shri awardee Javed Akhtar.
The first edition of the festival was organised in 2014.
Scripted by Urdu writer, Suhail Akhtar Warsi and conceptualised by Zubair Azmi, director of Urdu Markaz, the festival will celebrate the Urdu language through a plethora of events.
Actor Sachin Pilgaonkar and Dr Sanjay Deshpande, Director, Centre for Central Eurasian Studies, University of Mumbai, will also receive the Mohsin E Urdu Award for their contribution to Urdu.
A musical drama based on the works of Saadat Hasan Manto will also be staged as well as a talk titled “Kuch Ilmi Kuch Filmi Bhendi Bazar Se” on the literary and cultural life of Bhendi Bazar.
Azmi said it was an endeavour to celebrate and elaborate on the history of Bhendi Bazaar which he said was the cultural capital of erstwhile Bombay.
“Some of the country’s most noted poets from Majrooh Sultanpuri to Kaifi Azmi lived here. This area has played a role in enriching Urdu literature. It has acted as an incubator for many writers. The festival is a way to celebrate their contribution to this enriching culture,” Azmi said.
