A doctor, who allegedly jumped into the sea from Sewri-Nhava Sea Link Atal Setu Monday night, was in depression after the family of a doctor he was in a relationship with, opposed their decision to marry, the Navi Mumbai police have found in their preliminary inquiry.
Dr Omkar Kavitake, 32, a senior surgeon at Mumbai’s Sir J J Hospital, has not been found even after 42 hours of the search operation launched by the Ulwe police, along with marine security personnel.
A police officer, who is a part of the probe, told The Indian Express, “During the preliminary inquiry, when we spoke to some of his family members, friends, and colleagues, we found that Dr Kavitake was in a relationship with another doctor from Mumbai. The two were planning to get married soon”.
“But, around a month ago, the family of the woman doctor refused to accept their love relationship, and said no to their marriage plan. After this, Dr Kavitake reportedly slipped into depression. This may have been the trigger point that drove him to take the extreme step of jumping into the sea,” added the officer.
His family, friends and colleagues said they are in shock, as Dr Kavitake, who had eight years of experience in general surgery, laparoscopic surgery, and proctology, was doing well professionally, and was also slated to become a lecturer soon.
“We fear he may have been drowned, as the area in the sea where he jumped from the Atal Setu has deep and choppy waters,” another police officer said.
Dr Kavitake, who lived in the Kalamboli area along with his mother, called his mother Monday night, saying he was coming home for dinner. However, he instead left for Mumbai in his Honda Amaze and stopped on the Sewri-Nhava Sheva Sea-Link, where he was seen by a motorist. He allegedly jumped into the sea from the bridge at around 9.26 pm.
A motorist who had spotted him informed the control room, and a police team arrived at the scene to find his car and a phone inside. From the phone, the police could identify him, and inform his family members. No letter was found inside the doctor’s car, said the police.
The police, along with the marine security, have been searching for Dr Kavitake in the sea with the help of patrolling boats since Tuesday morning.
“We have informed police stations alongside the coastal area, fishermen, and local villagers to alert us if they spot a body,” said Arjun Rajane, Senior Inspector, Ulwe Police Station.
The police have so far only made a diary entry.
