The Mumbai customs department has arrested two people in connection with smuggling of 3,996 MDMA tablets, which have a net weight 1,636 grams, and estimated to be worth over Rs 3 crore in the international market.
MDMA stands for methylene dioxy methamphetamine, a psychotropic substance banned under NDPS Act in India.
Based on specific intelligence, the customs department intercepted an import parcel at the foreign post office, Mumbai, on January 23 and seized MDMA tablets from in it. The parcel was scheduled to be delivered to one Atish Pawar in Navi Mumbai.
Since the address on the parcel was of Ulwe, Navi Mumbai, the customs department attempted a controlled delivery with an intention of nabbing the accused. For this, a dummy parcel was prepared and was sent to the said address of the parcel receiver.
On Sunday and Monday, the customs department nabbed Rishabh Sharma and Faizal Khan while they received the parcel, customs sources said.
Sharma told customs officials that one Nigerian National with a name Vincent had asked him to collect the parcel. Khan assisted Sharma in the act hence he was arrested too, the source added.
Both have been charged under relevant sections of the Customs act. Investigators are trying to find out more details about the source of the seized synthetic drug.
They are also probing if the two accused have similarly ordered parcels from abroad in the past or if they have helped the accused foreigner in any other way.
