(File) A 24-year-old cricket fan lost Rs 70,000 to conmen who cash in on the growing popularity of fantasy sports platforms like Dream11 that promises prizes worth crores of rupees if players selected by the fans perform well.
According to the police, the victim who runs a furniture shop in Mumbai’s Ghatkopar was preparing a team on Dream11 last Saturday, when a friend told him about a person on Telegram who could provide the winning team on the platform so that he could earn crores of rupees in return.
“When contacted, the individual on Telegram asked him to pay Rs 2000 for a month-long membership during which they will provide him with the winning team. On Monday, the victim made a payment of Rs 2000 for the ‘membership’ after which the stranger told him to speak to his superior who would call him soon,” an officer said.
