Mumbai police suspended four police constables for “indiscipline and negligence” last week over leaving a foreign country’s consulate office in South Mumbai without security for around 30 minutes, while also leaving the key of the guard room, where weapons were kept, unattended.

According to police sources, constables Prasad Bankar, Vithhal Shelke, Shubham Harachkar and Balaji Vasave attached to the Naigaon Local Arms (LA) Division, were suspended on June 17 by the deputy commissioner of police, LA Naigaon.

The source added that Bankar and Shelke were posted on night shift guard duty at the consulate when a security officer paid a surprise visit on June 17 morning and found the two missing. Similarly, constables Harachkar and Vasave (from day shift) reported late for duty.

The security cover of the vital installation was compromised, as there was no guard there for nearly 30 minutes, till around 8.15 am when a constable on day duty arrived, the source said. When the security officer confronted the constable, he blamed the night duty cops for the negligence, claiming one of them left the duty in the night hours and second one also left early.

The constable also argued with the officer, following which he alerted the Armed Police Control room in Naigaon and senior officers.

Considering the act as a serious negligence and indiscipline, the senior officer conducted a preliminary inquiry, following which the DCP suspended the four police constables.

Such action would send a strong message across the department that such unprofessional behaviour will not be tolerated in a disciplined force like the Mumbai police, an officer said.
