THE Mumbai Police last week suspended two constables posted with Goregaon police station for allegedly refusing to pay a bill at an orchestra bar in Malad.
The police said the constables were under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident and they allegedly misbehaved with the restaurant staffers. The two also allegedly abused and manhandled police officers at Malad police station where they were taken later.
Suspended constables Rajesh Somnath Giri and Vinayak Anandrao Patil were posted at Goregaon police station this year.
Sources said the incident took place on November 2 when they went to Lavanya Deep restaurant and bar in Malad around 1 am. The constables, along with a friend, Naresh Harde, had food and consumed alcohol at the eatery.
“After they were given the bill, the duo started arguing with the owner and staffers. They refused to pay up and following a verbal spat with the staffers, the two started abusing them,” said a source.
Later, as the two started getting physical, the restaurant staff informed the nearby Malad police station.
“After two patrolling constables from Malad reached the spot, the duo abused and manhandled them. A back-up team from the police station was called in and the night inspector in-charge at Goregaon police station was also informed,” said an officer.
While Giri was off-duty since 3 pm that day, Patil had a day off.
Senior Police Inspector George Fernandes, Malad police station, said: “We got a call around 1.30 am on November 2 and we sent a team to tackle the situation. But the two started manhandling our patrolling officials, so they were brought to the police station.”
The duo allegedly misbehaved at the police station as well. Later, they were sent to a nearby government hospital for medical examination, which confirmed that they had consumed alcohol.
Malad police did not register a case. Later, a suspension report was served to the duo.
“The constables have alleged that the bar owners were informants of the special service branch of the Mumbai Police, due to which they got involved in an argument,” said a source.
