Mumbai boy tops CMAT in state, third in country

An engineer from Mumbai has topped the second edition of Common Management Admission Test in the state.

An engineer from Mumbai has topped the second edition of Common Management Admission Test (CMAT) in the state. On Wednesday ,the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) declared results of test held in September.

Margesh Wavhal,a Btech student from VJTI,who secured the third position with a score of 321 is the state topper. This time two candidates from Mumbai secured positions in the top 10 all India Ranking (AIR). Patrick D’Souza is the other candidate at the fourth position. Aniruddh Batra from Delhi topped the CMAT with a score of 330/400.

“This is my first attempt and I am happy that I not only scored well but managed to secure third position in AIR. I completed Btech from VJTI in electronic engineering last year and now I want to opt for MBA in marketing at Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies (JBIMS). The MBA marketing degree along with the Btech degree will enhance my portfolio,” said Wavhal.

In the second edition of CMAT,Mumbai saw the highest number of registrations at 11,000. “This time Karnataka has the highest scorers followed by Chennai and Gurgaon. Out of 48,823 candidates who attempted the exam 9,000 candidates were from Mumbai — the highest in the country,” said Dr S S Mantha,AICTE chairman.

The pattern of the paper in the September exam was not very different as compared to the CMAT February 2012. However unlike CAT,students did not have to struggle with time management. Most of them were able to complete the test in two-and-a-half hours and had enough time to try unanswered questions.

When asked about the findings of the expert committee formed by AICTE to look into the issue of alleged wrong questions in the test,Mantha said four to five questions had been declared wrong. “Each question carried four marks. If a candidate has attempted one of these wrong questions,we will calculate his total marks out of 396 instead of 400,” added Mantha

The CMAT September 2012 scores would be accepted by more than 2,000 B-schools across India. The AICTE has displayed the link to the ‘AICTE approved institutions using CMAT scores’ on the CMAT website.

However the list also features B-schools like Management Development Institute (MDI),Gurgaon and Xavier’s Labour Resource Institute (XLRI),Jamshedpur, which are not considering CMAT scores for this year’s admission process.

Understanding new CMAT

The candidates will be able to download the electronically generated score card from the CMAT website from October 17 to November 17

For the admission in the academic year 2013-15,candidates can also take CMAT January-February 2013. The best of the scores will be accepted by B-schools

Since candidates can now attempt CMAT twice every year, comparison between the scores achieved by candidates who attempt in both September and January will be done on the basis of total marks and not their ranks
