Three teenagers, part of a 10-member trekking team, sustained serious injuries in a bee attack at the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) in Mumbai on Monday, officials said.
According to the Thane Municipal Corporation’s (TMC) disaster cell, the group went for trekking at Yeoor Hills inside SGNP and got trapped inside one of the caves located in the hill top while trying to escape the bee attack, even as three of them were stung by the insects. They sent SOS messages to the disaster cell, following which its quick response force along with local police rescued them after an hour-long operation.
“The hill side has forests which have several bee hives, one of which was damaged by the trekkers, following which the insects attacked them,” an official said.
“A team from Vartaknagar police and Thane Disaster Response Force rescued them. The children are from Thane as well as areas like Vikhroli, Kanjurmarg, Ghatkopar, etc., in Mumbai,” another official said.
The rescued trekkers were taken to a local hospital, where three teenagers —Samarth Mayekar (18), Varad Basa (18) and Soham Deshmukh (18) — who sustained serious injuries in the bee attack, are in a stable condition, officials said.
