ATTEMPTING to chase an auto-driver who sped off following a quarrel over change of Rs 2, a 26-year-old died when he fell off the moving autorickshaw that he was hanging on to.

The incident took place in the wee hours of July 23 at Godrej Colony, Vikhroli.

The deceased, Chetan Acharanekar, who died of a head injury, was returning home after a job interview in Goa. The police probe reveals that Acharanekar was holding on to the metal frame of the rickshaw, causing the moving rickshaw to tilt and fall on him.

“The incident took place two days ago, an argument took place between the passenger and the rickshaw driver about change to be returned. The rickshaw driver asked the passenger to tender change of Rs 8, but the passenger demanded that the rickshaw driver return Rs 2 to him. As they could not reach a common ground the driver started to drive away but the passenger did not let go of the rickshaw,” said Shridhar Hanchate, senior police inspector, Vikhroli police station.

The rickshaw driver was identified as Kamlesh Gupta. While Acharanekar died of head injury, Gupta was arrested on charges of culpable homicide under the Indian Penal Code.

On the night of the incident, Acharanekar had hailed the autorickshaw from the domestic airport in Santa Cruz.

“The 26-year-old was job hunting and had returned from Goa, while looking for a job. Acharanekar was dropped off inside Godrej Colony in Vikhroli and the fare was Rs 178 for the journey. Fed up of the arguing, when Gupta tried to flee in his rickshaw, Acharanekar caught hold of the rickshaw frame and went along with the three wheeler until it turned and fell on him,” said an investigator.
