TWO WOMEN have been arrested for allegedly kidnapping an 11-year-old girl and employing her as a domestic help. The accused, Saniya Kapadia (30) and Naseema Pathan (65), who were arrested on Friday, are currently out on bail.

The girl had been reported missing by her parents from their Agripada residence on October 29, following which, the police registered a case of kidnapping. A few days later, a domestic help alerted the police about having spotted the girl at the residence of the accused. Senior Inspector of Agripada police station, S Agawane, confirmed the arrests.

“On October 29, the girl went missing from her house near Dagdi chawl in Agripada when her parents were asleep. When they could not find her till late evening, the family members approached the police and a case of kidnapping was registered,” said an officer.

For the next two days, the police looked for the girl and also checked CCTV footage of the area, but to no avail. Eventually, a domestic help, who resided in the same area as the victim, informed the police that she had seen the girl in a building where she worked near the Byculla police station.

“A police team reached the spot and found the girl, along with a woman, identified as Saniya Kapadia, and a child, leaving the building on Friday,” an officer said. Following this, Kapadia was detained. “The girl said Kapadia had told her to stay at her place for a few days and take care of her toddler. The woman, however, claimed that the girl approached her and said her mother was unwell and she was in need of money… thus, she kept her at her residence as a help,” the officer said.

Later in the day, Kapadia was arrested, along with her relative Naseema Pathan, who knew about the girl, on charges of kidnapping. They were produced in court on Saturday, which granted them bail.
