A 16-year-old boy, Ketan Anil Shinde, died after he drowned in the sea near Girgaum Chowpatty Thursday. Police said Shinde had ventured into the sea along with two other boys of his age. While one of the two others swam to safety and the other one was rescued, Shinde could not be saved.
According to the police, it was around 3.30 pm when a lifeguard noticed that the three boys were drowning. “One of the boys came out on his own, while 16-year-old Sunny Santosh Dongre was rescued by the fire rescue team and the lifeguard. The third boy, Shinde, was missing and was rescued last. We gave him first aid and took him to Nair hospital where he was declared dead on arrival,” said a fire official.
Dongre has also been admitted to the Nair hospital and his condition is now stable. R N Bharmal, dean of Nair Hospital, said, “He (Dongre) is in a breathless condition as water has entered his lungs. We have admitted him in the medicine unit but cannot comment much until his breathing functions become normal.” The Disaster Management Cell had predicted that 4.58-metre high tidal waves would hit the shore around 1.30 pm.
