JYOTHIBAI NAIK, the mother of 25-year-old Agniveer Murali, who was martyred in cross border gunfire and shelling along the Line of Control during Operation Sindoor, has filed a writ petition in the Bombay High Court, seeking the same benefits to Agniveer soldiers as entitled to regular soldiers who die in the line of duty. The petition says that while both Agniveers and regular soldiers ‘perform identical duties, undertake the same risks and make the same level of sacrifice’, they are treated unequally when it comes to service benefits, particularly in cases of death.

Murali joined the Army in 2022 as part of the Agniveer scheme, which was introduced in June 2022 by the government altering the existing recruitment structure for soldiers below the officer rank, limiting their tenure to a four-year contractual engagement. Murali died on May 9 in the Pooch sector of Jammu and Kashmir. His parents, hailing from Andhra Pradesh, worked as daily wagers in the construction industry in Mumbai.
