MORE than 250 bus stops in the city are inaccessible to commuters due to problems like encroachment, hawkers using the premises or illegal parking. This was revealed in a survey by BEST.
BEST officials visited all 6,000 bus stops in the city between December 2012 and February 2013. They found that in some cases, families had made makeshift home by hanging tarpaulin sheets between the bus stop and the adjoining wall. Other stops were being used to dry clothes and storage space. In many cases, vehicles were parked illegally in front of the stops, making it difficult and dangerous for buses to halt as commuters had to wait on the road, said officials.
We have sent a written note to BMC on the issue, said O P Gupta, general manager,BEST. However,on taking action against encroachments at bus stops,Gupta said,This matter does not come under BESTs jurisdiction,so I will not be able to answer this question.
Sanjay Ambole, who took over as the chairman of BEST committee earlier this month, said he will request for a meeting with the Municipal Commissioner and the Mayor at the earliest regarding action against encroachments. We also plan to meet traffic police officials and authorities at Regional Transport Offices to prevent parking up to 10-15 feet near BEST bus stops, Ambole said.
Like bus stops, the restrooms constructed for its drivers and conductors are also encroached upon by hawkers with corrupt BEST officials nod,NCPs Bhaskar Khursange informed BEST committee on Monday.
