With the Met department expecting the monsoon to be revived only in the next two to three days in the city, the end of June is likely to be mostly dry, much like the rest of the month has been for Mumbai. Until June 26,Colaba received only 128 mm rain compared to the average of 594.2 mm from 2004 to 2011. Santacruz received 203.8 mm as opposed to the 2004-2011 average of 583.8 mm.
This year, the south-west monsoon was delayed, reaching Kerala only on June 5 instead of June 1. Following this delay,it reached Mumbai on June 17 instead of the normal onset date of June 10. However, despite arriving in mid-June,the city has remained mostly dry, receiving heavy showers only on one or two days with light showers on some other days.
This weak performance is a country-wide trend, with a 23 per cent deficiency in overall rainfall received in the country till now. Recently, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) downgraded its forecast for the south-west monsoon rainfall in the country from 99 per cent of long period average (LPA) to 96 per cent.
It is surprising that we have not received much rain in June this year, but the monsoon current has been weak. There have been no weather systems to give significant rain, said V K Rajeev, director of weather forecast,IMD. However,we still have three more months left and expect the monsoon to make up. We are expecting July and August to give good rain, said Rajeev.
On Wednesday, the IMDs Colaba weather station received 1.6 mm rainfall between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm whereas the Santacruz station received no rainfall. The Met department expects the monsoon to pick up again in the city in two to three days. Though Mumbai hasnt received much rain recently,South Konkan has received good rainfall. Hopefully, the cloud bands will move northwards and bring rain here. In the next two to three days, the monsoon will be in the process of picking up and there will be some showers, added Rajeev.
