The Mumbai Police are likely to reach Allahabad late on Tuesday along with two city-based accused in a murder case. Amit Kumar Jaiswal (36) and Preeti Elvira Surin (26) were arrested by the Crime Branch on Sunday for allegedly killing model and small-time actress Meenakshi Thapa (26) in Allahabad last month.
Thapa,a Nepalese national who was settled in Dehradun before moving to Mumbai, had gone missing a month ago from her Lokhandwala residence. She was brought to Allahabad, murdered, her body dismembered and disposed after a failed extortion attempt, the police said.
Mumbai Police Crime Branch sources on Monday said that the two accused have told them that Thapas decapitated body was dumped in a water tank in the building in Allahabad they stayed in.
They have told us that after the murder, they cut off her head. They disposed of the head by throwing it from a bus between Allahabad and Lucknow. This was after they dumped the body in a water tank in the building they were staying in. We have sent a team to Allahabad to recover the body, a Crime Branch officer said.
However,Allahabad police said that Mumbai police were yet to officially get in touch with them.
Shailesh Kumar Yadav Allahabad SP (City),said: We have been hearing about the case through the media. But so far,the Mumbai Police have not informed us officially or sought our request.
Surendra Jaiswal,Amits father and a lawyer, said over phone that he came to know of Thapas disappearance on March 30 when the Mumbai police questioned him. I had no idea that Amit was involved in the crime. He had been in Mumbai since July last year and had told me that he was working in a bank. He had left Allahabad after a tiff with his wife, said Jaiswal, adding that Amit used to run a coaching centre at Mumfordganj, besides practising as a lawyer.
He said that Amit,a father of two,met Preeti a couple of years ago. She encouraged him to join Bhojpuri films. When these things came to my knowledge,I closed down the coaching centre in June last year. In July,he left. I had thought that things would cool down after some time and he would return, said Jaiswal.
Amit visited him in November last year, said Jaiswal. When I asked him to return and take up work here,he left and, since then was not in touch with me, said Jaiswal.
Police said, after moving to the city last year, the two accused were living in Virar and befriended Thapa at a film shoot. Thapa had told the two that she was from a rich family in Dehradun and was pursuing acting as a hobby, police said.
The couple hatched a plan to kidnap Thapa and ask for a ransom. On March 13,they took Thapa to Allahabad on the pretext of a film shoot. They got her ATM card and mobile SIM card after killing her in Gorakhpur, a Crime Branch officer said.
The duo allegedly made calls to Thapas mother and demanded a ransom of Rs 15 lakh. They allegedly threatened her family that they would shoot a porn film featuring Thapa in it,and would kill her if their demand was not fulfilled.
Police said the couple instructed Thapas brother Navraj to deposit the cash in her account. Navraj had filed a kidnapping complaint with the Dehradun police, which was transferred to Amboli police station.
Police officers said that Navraj had given the kidnappers Rs 60,000.
