“A 6-year-old girl was sexually assaulted by one of the sweepers of the school two days ago. The parents and relatives of the victim complained to the school authorities soon after the incident took place. Upon being agitated over inaction by the school, the crowd gathered in the school premises and started stone pelting.” Nashik SP Rural Sanjay Mohite said. The police stated that the police has removed the school teachers and staff from the premises before the arson started.

On Friday, which is generally a holiday in Malegaon, a mob decided to march up to the school to seek answers from the management. Things however got out of hand pretty quickly and the mob started destroying properties.

Local police and anyone who was found clicking pictures of the incident were also assaulted. The intensity of the violence was such that the police had to beat a retreat a number of times.

Malegaon is a communally sensitive place and local police claimed that they had to handle the situation carefully as also the whole of Maharashtra was celebrating the festival of Gudi Padwa Friday.

“Some of our police officers were hurt. Things are however in control now,” a senior police official from Malegaon said.
