The first general body meeting of the newly elected corporators in Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation was marked by protests by MNS corporators, whose strength had gone up from seven to 28. MNS corporators played the Marathi card once again and protested against the use of Hindi by BJP leader Dilip Patel.

Patel was talking about the recent colour poisoning incident in Dharavi in Hindi. As he started speaking,MNS corporators — led by Dilip Lande and Prakash Darekar (brother of MNS MLA Pravin Darekar)— started shouting slogans demanding that Patel speak in Marathi. Proceedings of the house were disrupted for over 10 minutes.

Eventually, mayor Sunil Prabhu brought out the rule book and said that corporators are allowed to speak in any language. “Corporators are allowed to speak in any language. However,Marathi being the official language of the house, all documentation work needs to be in Marathi,” he said.

In addition to discussions about BMC’s laxity in preventing the Dharavi incident, the new set of corporators also passed purchase notices for two plots in Kandivali that were going to lapse soon.
