Mumbai police on Sunday arrested nine people for allegedly killing a 28-year-old man during a road rage incident on Saturday in Malad. The accused had attacked the man with a stone, said police, who are looking for the other accused persons.

Police said the victim, Akash Dattatray Mayin, runs a tour and travels business and lives with wife in Hyderabad as she is employed in a company there. Mayin and wife had come to his parents’ place in Mumbai for Dussehra.

On Saturday, the couple bought a new scooter and were returning home. His parents were travelling in an autorickshaw behind Mayin’s two-wheeler. Around 6.30 pm, when they reached near Malad (East) railway station, opposite Abhyudaya Bank on Shivaji Chowk, Mayin got into an altercation with an autorickshaw driver. The driver, whose vehicle was ahead of Mayin, allegedly swerved to one side of the road, which led to an argument.

“During the argument, an angry Mayin allegedly manhandled the autorickshaw driver and his two friends. Following this, the autorickshaw driver and his two friends, along with a few others, assaulted Mayin,” said a senior police officer.

In the videos of the incident, which went viral on social media, Mayin’s mother, an MNS worker, is seen protecting him from the assault.

A police officer said that video of only the second part of the incident had gone viral. But the violence was from both sides.

Severely injured, Mayin was rushed to a trauma care hospital. He sustained injuries to his legs, arms, stomach and waist. During treatment, he died of internal injuries at the hospital, the officer added.
On his wife Anushri Mayin’s complaint, Dindoshi police on Sunday registered a murder case, formed multiple teams and launched a hunt for the accused. With the help of CCTV footage, the police arrested the nine accused, six of whom have been identified as Avinash Namdev Kadam, Amit Joginder Vishwakarma, Aditya Dinesh Singh, Jayaprakash Deepak Amte, Rakesh Malku Dhawale and Sahil Sikandar Kadam.

Avinash Kadam already has cases registered against him at Pantnagar and Borivali police stations for causing hurt and accidents, the police said. Aditya Singh and Jaiprakash Amte also have cases of assaults against them in Dindoshi police station, they said.

Police also recovered the stone used by the accused in the murder. “Investigation revealed that it was a case of road rage turning violent. The police acted swiftly and arrested the accused who had fled to other districts,” the senior officer added.

All the accused were produced in a court and remanded in police custody until October 22.

Awhad slams law & order situation

Police action gained momentum after NCP (SP) leader Jitendra Awhad highlighted the incident on X and raised questions about law and order in Mumbai. He said that while news of the attack on Baba Siddique is still fresh, this news is very saddening. “Law and order has been made a mere joke,” he said in the post written in Marathi.

“Be it the shooting of a Sena leader in a police station by MLA Ganpat Gaikwad from Kalyan a few months ago, or street attacks on former corporators in Pune and Nagpur… Attacks on political leaders in cases of extortion and misappropriation of money have increased tremendously. It does not seem the state government has learned any lesson from any of these cases,” Awhad said.
